My child studies for hours but still gets low marks - why does this happen?

Almost always because effort and technique are two different things, and only one of them is visible from the outside. A child sitting at a desk for three hours with a textbook open is undeniably putting in time. Whether that time converts into marks depends on how those three hours were spent - and that part, a parent watching from the doorway genuinely cannot see. Re-reading a chapter for the fourth time feels like studying and looks like studying, but it is one of the least effective ways to prepare for an exam that actually exists, which is why a child can do it sincerely, for hours, and still walk into a test unable to retrieve what they supposedly "knew".

This is the trap worth naming before anything else: a technique problem looks identical to a motivation problem from a report card. Both produce the same number. A low mark answers none of these on its own - it is the output of all three, and a parent's instinct is usually to interrogate only the first one ("were you even studying?") because it is the easiest to ask and the hardest for a child to defend against.

A genuine effort problem has its own tells, and they are different from a technique problem's tells. A child with an effort problem avoids starting, needs constant reminders to open a book, finishes the minimum and stops, and shows the same pattern across every subject, not just one. A child with a technique problem, by contrast, often wants to do well, starts on time, sits for the full planned duration, and still produces a paper that does not reflect what they clearly told you, out loud, the night before. If your child can explain a concept to you verbally the evening before a test and still score low on that exact topic the next day, that is not effort failing - that is a gap between what a child can retrieve when relaxed and unprompted at home, and what they can retrieve cold, under time pressure, in an exam room. Watch, over two or three assessments rather than one, whether the same subject keeps producing this pattern: real time spent, real conversation about the topic beforehand, and then a mark that does not match either. That distinction matters for exams, which never ask a child to recognise an answer among options already in front of them - they ask a child to produce one from memory under time pressure, a different skill entirely from the one re-reading builds.

None of this means the hours already put in were wasted in a moral sense - it means they were pointed at the wrong activity, a coaching problem rather than a character problem. Nobody arrives at "test myself from memory" instinctively, and most schools do not teach it explicitly. Switching from re-reading to self-testing on the same material, for the same amount of time, often lifts a mark within two to three weeks, because the underlying knowledge was frequently already there.

Knowing a topic and answering a topic under exam conditions are not the same test, and a child can pass the first one at home every single evening while failing the second one on the day that counts. Studying from a textbook or a notebook of notes trains a child to recognise a topic when it is presented cleanly, one concept at a time, with no time limit and no pressure. An actual exam paper mixes topics, phrases questions differently from how the textbook phrased them, allocates a fixed number of minutes per mark, and gives no second attempt. A child who has only ever revised from notes meets that format for the very first time on exam day itself - which is a genuinely unfair position to be in, and it has nothing to do with how hard they studied.

The fix is mechanical and does not need a tutor to start: get hold of previous years' question papers or the board's official sample papers for the subject and class in question, and have your child sit at least two or three of them under real timed conditions - same time limit, no notes, no pausing - before the actual exam. A question that says "explain" wants reasoning written out; a child who "states" a fact instead gets partial credit at best. A question that says "differentiate between X and Y" wants two things compared directly, side by side; an answer that describes X thoroughly and never mentions Y again loses marks it should not have, despite genuinely knowing both topics.

Command words - the instruction verb at the start of a question - carry more weight than most students realise, and almost nobody is taught to read them deliberately rather than skim past them on the way to the part of the question that looks like the "real" content.

A useful home habit that costs nothing: before writing any answer during revision, have your child underline the command word and say out loud, in one sentence, what kind of answer it is asking for - before writing a single word of the actual response. This single pause, repeated across a few weeks of practice, fixes a surprising share of "knew it but still lost marks" cases, because most of that gap is not a knowledge gap at all - it is a question-reading habit that was never built.

A real Class 8 Science example

The question read: "Differentiate between respiration and combustion." A child who knew both processes cold wrote four solid lines about respiration - correct, detailed, worth perhaps two of the five marks available - and never mentioned combustion at all. The examiner had nothing to compare it against and could only credit the respiration half. The same child, asked afterwards, could describe combustion just as fluently as respiration. The knowledge was never the problem; the word "differentiate" asked for both sides set against each other, and the answer only gave one.

Is running out of time in the exam costing marks they actually have?

A child who spends twelve minutes perfecting a two-mark answer at the start of a paper and then rushes or entirely skips a ten-mark question at the end has not failed to learn the ten-mark topic - they have failed to manage a fixed amount of time across a paper that does not care which question comes first. This is invisible from a mark alone; a low score on the last question looks exactly like "didn't know that topic" on a report card, when the real story is "never got to write a proper answer for it".

The clearest sign this is what is actually happening: ask your child, straight after any test, whether they finished the paper, and if not, which question they were on when time was called. A consistent pattern - always running out on the last one or two questions, regardless of subject - points squarely at pacing rather than knowledge. A pattern where the incomplete question changes each time, with no consistent position in the paper, more often points at genuine difficulty with that specific topic instead.

The fix that works fastest is deliberately unglamorous: before any practice paper, work out roughly how many minutes each mark is worth (a paper with 100 marks in three hours gives roughly 1.8 minutes per mark, for instance), write that number on the top of the paper, and have your child check the clock at the halfway point to see whether they are roughly on pace. Done for two or three practice papers running, this single habit is often enough to fix a time problem permanently, because most time trouble comes from spending too long perfecting the questions a child feels confident about, at the direct cost of the ones still waiting further down the page.

Could handwriting or presentation be costing marks despite correct knowledge?

CBSE has been explicit that examiners do not award separate marks purely for neat handwriting - a correct answer in untidy handwriting and the same correct answer in beautiful handwriting are, in principle, worth the same. But that is not the whole story: CBSE's own marking-scheme documents instruct evaluators to award marks part-by-part and step-by-step, totalling what was earned at each stage in the margin (see sources below). That system depends on an examiner being able to find each step in what a child actually wrote. A correct method buried inside a single unbroken block of text, with no headings, underlining or clearly separated steps, is much harder to credit fully within the time an examiner has per paper - not because presentation itself carries marks, but because it is what makes marks that are already there easy to locate.

In Maths and Science specifically, this shows up as a very concrete pattern: a child who does the working correctly in their head or on rough paper, writes only the final answer, and then loses the step-wise marks that a fully shown method would have earned even if the final answer had been wrong. In Maths, formula, substitution and final answer are frequently marked as three separate steps worth marks independently - so showing all three, even messily, earns more than a clean final answer with no visible working.

Practical fixes here are small and mechanical rather than about handwriting quality: always show every step of working, not just the answer; underline or box the final answer so an examiner does not have to hunt for it; leave a visible line between separate questions; and label diagrams clearly rather than assuming an examiner will infer what a sketch represents. None of this requires better handwriting - it requires a habit of making the correct thinking visible on the page, which a child who "knows it in their head" often skips entirely because, from the inside, it feels unnecessary.

How should I respond to the low marks without punishing effort that was real?

The instinctive parental response to a low mark after visible effort is often some version of "you clearly didn't study properly", delivered with real frustration, because the mismatch between the hours put in and the number on the page feels like it has to mean something was faked or half-hearted.
