It starts where Science itself starts in Indian schools: general science at Class 6, splitting toward Physics, Chemistry and Biology by Class 9, ending with the board-level topics a Class 10 paper actually asks.

Every question has an explanation attached to it, and every fact was checked against stable, verifiable science rather than a specific textbook chapter - because chapter names change with each syllabus revision, but what photosynthesis produces does not.

What is covered

Science, class by class

Science is taught as one combined subject up to Class 5, folded into EVS alongside geography and civics. From Class 6 it becomes its own subject, and by Class 9 it starts dividing into the three sciences a Class 11 student eventually picks between. Knowing that shape helps enormously when a child is stuck, because most of what feels like a Class 9 problem is really a Class 6 or 7 gap that was never closed.

Class 6: how the world is put together

Where food comes from and what a plant does with sunlight, sorting materials by their properties, the first ideas about electric circuits, magnets, and how a shadow forms. Nothing here needs a formula. What matters is noticing - that glass lets light through and wood does not, that a magnet has two poles that either pull together or push apart.

Class 7: why things change

Heat and temperature, acids and bases, and the difference between a physical change that can be undone and a chemical change that cannot. Respiration and the transport of water inside a plant arrive here too. This is the class where a child starts being asked not just what happens, but why - why rusting cannot be reversed the way melting ice can.

Class 8: forces, sound and the body

Force and pressure, friction, how sound travels and why it cannot cross a vacuum, combustion and flames, microorganisms, and the first proper look at adolescence and the changing body. This is also usually where a child either settles into liking science or starts to dread it, because the ideas stop being purely descriptive and start needing to be applied to a new situation on the test.

Class 9 and 10: the split into three sciences

Class 9 opens with the states of matter, atoms and the structure of the atom, cells and tissues, then the laws of motion, gravitation, and work and energy - the physics, chemistry and biology strands running side by side but not yet named as separate subjects. By Class 10 they are in full board-exam form: chemical reactions and equations, metals and non-metals, life processes and heredity, light and the human eye, electricity and magnetism. These are exactly the chapters a Class 10 board paper draws its questions from.

Why this quiz avoids naming exact chapters

NCERT has revised its Science textbooks for the younger classes more than once in recent years, and a chapter renamed this year can be renamed again next year. Rather than risk stating a chapter title that is wrong for the edition your child has, every question here tests the underlying scientific fact directly - what a neuron does, what unit force is measured in, which gas plants release during photosynthesis. Those do not change with a syllabus revision.

How to use it well

Start at the class your child is currently in, run ten questions, and read the explanation on every miss before moving on - that one line is usually worth more than the question itself, because it attaches the correct term to an idea the child likely already half understands. The end screen groups misses by topic rather than listing them in order, and that grouping is the part worth acting on. Three misses all tagged Light is a single concept to revisit with a diagram or a torch and a mirror at home; three misses spread across three unrelated topics is usually just the class being pitched slightly too high for today.

Science compounds more than most subjects - a shaky Class 6 idea about what a conductor is will resurface as a shaky Class 9 answer about electric current. Ten well-read minutes now, at the right class level, is worth more than a rushed twenty at a level that is really a year ahead.

What to do when a child struggles

If a child gets most of a class band wrong, the honest first move is to drop down a class rather than push through - a quiz that is mostly misses teaches almost nothing, because there is no correct answer being reinforced. If the same handful of topics keep coming up wrong across several attempts - sound, or electricity, or forces - that is usually not a memory problem. It tends to mean the underlying idea was never properly demonstrated, only read about, and a science idea that has never been seen in action rarely survives being tested on paper. That is exactly the gap a good teacher closes in twenty minutes with a real example, which a quiz on its own cannot do.

Facts worth knowing cold

  • Photosynthesis uses sunlight, water and carbon dioxide, and releases oxygen.
  • Sound needs a medium - it cannot travel through a vacuum.
  • The SI unit of force is the newton; the SI unit of work and energy is the joule.
  • Metals conduct heat and electricity well; graphite is the rare non-metal that also conducts electricity.
  • The nephron filters blood in the kidney; the neuron carries messages in the nervous system.

Is this Science quiz free?

Yes, completely. There is no account, no download and no card. It works exactly the same whether or not you ever book a class with us.

Does my child need an account?

Why does the quiz only start at Class 6?

Because that is when Science becomes its own subject in Indian schools. Up to Class 5, science topics live inside EVS - Environmental Studies - alongside geography and civics. From Class 6, EVS splits and Science begins on its own, eventually branching into Physics, Chemistry and Biology by Class 9. Our general knowledge quiz covers Class 1 to 5 in the meantime.

Is this exactly what my child's NCERT textbook covers?

It is built to match the real progression - general science at Class 6 to 8, splitting toward Physics, Chemistry and Biology from Class 9 - but it deliberately avoids naming exact chapters. NCERT has been revising its Class 6 to 8 Science textbooks in recent years, and a chapter title confirmed today can be renamed by the time this page is read. Which topics does the quiz cover?

About 41 topics in total. Class 6 to 8 cover food and nutrition, materials and their properties, electric circuits, light and shadows, force, pressure and sound. From Class 9, it splits toward the states of matter and atomic structure, cells and tissues, the laws of motion and energy in Physics and Chemistry, and by Class 10, chemical reactions, life processes, heredity, light and the human eye, and electricity and magnetism.

Which class should we pick?

Start with the class your child is in. If they answer most of them without pausing, move up a class - a quiz that is too easy is a pleasant way of learning nothing. If they get under half right, drop down one and rebuild from there. The class number is a difficulty setting, not a judgement.

My child knows the answer but not the term. Does that matter?

It matters for the exam, so it is worth practising both. Science at this level increasingly rewards being able to name a concept precisely - writing 'neuron' rather than 'the nerve thing' - because board papers and school tests mark on the correct term. The explanation under each question is there to attach the term to the idea your child likely already understands.

Can my child use the keyboard?

When not to use it: Not a substitute for practicals or diagrams. Much of the Class 10 paper is drawn - a quiz cannot practise a ray diagram or a labelled nephron.
