Why NCERT maths is lighter than you remember

Most parents who use a worksheet generator for the first time think it is broken. The Class 5 sheet has no decimals on it. The Class 4 sheet stops at four-digit numbers. There is no HCF, no LCM, no percentage and no fraction addition anywhere. That does not match what you did at school, and it very likely does not match what your neighbour’s child is being set.

The generator is not broken. The books changed, and the change was larger than the coverage suggested. Classes 1 and 2 now use Joyful Mathematics, and Classes 3, 4 and 5 use Maths Mela, with the Class 4 and Class 5 books published only in 2025. Checking the chapters themselves rather than summaries of them turns up four things worth knowing.

Four things the current books actually say

There are no decimals anywhere in Classes 1 to 5. The older Class 5 book had a chapter called Tenths and Hundredths. The new one dropped it. Decimals now begin in Class 6.

Class 5 stops at 99,999. Place value reaches ten thousands and no further. There are no lakhs and no crores anywhere in primary, which surprises almost everybody.

There is no addition or subtraction of fractions. Class 5 does equivalent fractions and comparing them, and that is all. Adding fractions is Class 6 work.

Class 3 division is always exact. Every division expression in the Class 3 book comes out whole. Remainders are introduced in Class 4, in a chapter of their own.

There is also a vocabulary point that costs nothing to get right. NCERT’s teacher note says to use the word regrouping rather than carrying, and the words carry and borrow do not appear mathematically anywhere in these books. Every sheet here follows that.

So which mode should you use?

Open your child’s school maths book before deciding. If it has decimals in Class 4, or lakhs in Class 5, or HCF and LCM at primary level, then the school is teaching from a private publisher’s course rather than from NCERT, and school-typical is the honest match. Plenty of CBSE schools do exactly this.

If your child works from the NCERT book itself, use NCERT strict and resist the urge to push harder. A sheet that feels easy to you is a sheet that matches what your child is assessed on. Confidence at the right level does more than frustration at the wrong one.

The one thing we would not recommend is doing what most worksheet sites do, which is to pick a difficulty somewhere in between and never mention that there is a question here at all.

Difficulty, and what each level means

Warm-up keeps everything inside the friendly part of the range with no regrouping - for building confidence, or for a child coming back after a gap. Practice uses the full range for the class with regrouping. Challenge brings in missing numbers, word problems and the boundary cases where a place value gets crossed or a zero sits in the middle. Challenge never reaches into the next class’s work - a Class 3 challenge sheet still has no remainders on it.

What each class covers

  • Class 1: numbers to 99, adding and subtracting within 20 only, no division at all.
  • Class 2: numbers to 100, tables to 10 built by adding, sharing equally instead of dividing.
  • Class 3: the × and ÷ symbols arrive, products stay at or below 100, every division exact.
  • Class 4: column method with regrouping, remainders, perimeter, and cm, g and ml.
  • Class 5: numbers to 99,999, factors and multiples, equivalent fractions, area by counting squares.
Using the sheets well

Twelve questions beats thirty

Pick a length your child will finish. Twelve questions is right for Class 1 and 2 and for a school night; twenty suits Class 3 to 5; thirty is a weekend or pre-test sheet. A child who has given up by question eight learns nothing from the twenty-two that follow, and you have taught them that worksheets are something to be endured.

Keep the answer key back until the sheet is finished. It prints on a separate page for exactly that reason. Then mark it together rather than handing back a corrected page - the useful conversation is about where a method went wrong, and it can only happen while your child still remembers what they were doing.

One topic at a time is better than a mixed sheet for practice, and a mixed sheet is better for revision. If the same kind of error keeps coming back across several sheets - always the regrouping, always the middle zero, always the word problems rather than the sums - that is a specific thing to raise with the class teacher, and it is far more useful than saying a child is weak at maths.

Finally, word problems deserve their own treatment. A child who can do twenty column sums and fails every word problem does not have a maths problem; they have a reading-the-question problem. Read those aloud together for a few weeks before assuming anything else.

What is the difference between NCERT strict and school-typical?

NCERT strict is clamped to what the current NCERT primary books actually contain. School-typical adds the material most private CBSE schools and most parents still expect at each class - bigger numbers, the multiplication and division symbols earlier, remainders sooner, and decimals and lakhs at Class 4 and 5. Both are honest. Which one matches your child depends entirely on the school.

Because the books changed and very few people noticed. The current primary books are materially lighter than most parents' own memory of school. There are no decimals anywhere in Classes 1 to 5, no addition or subtraction of fractions, and Class 5 stops at five-digit numbers, so no lakhs and no crores. Class 3 division is always exact - remainders do not appear until Class 4. If a sheet looks too easy for your child, that is the reason, and the school-typical toggle exists precisely for it.

So which mode should I use?

Look at your child's school maths book first. If it contains decimals in Class 4, or lakhs in Class 5, the school is using a private publisher's course rather than NCERT, and school-typical is the closer match. If your child follows the NCERT book directly, use NCERT strict and do not worry that it feels light - it is what they are being assessed against.

Can the answer key be wrong?

It should not be possible. Every question and its answer come from the same calculation - the generator picks the numbers, computes the result, then writes both. There is no typed answer key that could drift out of step with a typed question. If you do find a disagreement, please tell us, because it would mean a real bug.

Why does it say regrouping instead of carrying?

Because that is the word NCERT uses, and its teacher's note says so explicitly. The words carry and borrow do not appear mathematically anywhere in the current primary books. Using the school's vocabulary at home saves a child from having to translate between two sets of words for the same idea.

Why does it stop at Class 5?

Because the boundaries for Classes 1 to 5 were checked against the NCERT chapters themselves, and we are not willing to generate maths for Class 6 upward until the same work is done for those books. Generating a question outside a child's range is the worst thing a tool like this can do.

How many questions should we do at once?

Twelve is usually right for Class 1 and 2 and for a school night. Twenty suits Class 3 to 5. Thirty is a weekend sheet or revision before a test. A child who is fed up by question eight learns nothing from questions nine to thirty.
