The score is simply how many were right - and the class you pick decides exactly what kind of question shows up, from add-and-subtract within 20 in Class 1 to trigonometric ratios and simple interest in Class 10.
Nothing here is a fixed worksheet. Every question is built on the spot from number ranges taken straight out of the current NCERT syllabus for that class, and the answer is computed from the same numbers that build the question - so there is no hand-typed answer key anywhere in this tool for a mistake to hide in.

What “mental maths” actually means at each class
Mental arithmetic is not the same skill at six and at sixteen. A Class 1 child working out 8 + 5 is bridging across ten for the first time - a genuinely new idea. A Class 9 child working out 15% of 220 is applying something they already understand, at speed. Both are “mental maths”, and a tool that asks the same kind of question of both children is not respecting either of them. That is the whole reason this sprint is built around the class picker rather than a single difficulty slider.
Class 1 to 5: exactly what NCERT covers, and no further
The bottom five classes are built from docs/ncert-maths-progression.md, a scope document put together by reading the current NCERT primary chapters directly rather than trusting a secondary summary. A few of its findings surprise most parents: there are no decimals anywhere in Class 1 to 5, division never produces a remainder before Class 4, and Class 5 stops at 99,999 with no lakhs or crores at all. This sprint holds every one of those lines. A Class 3 division question here is always exact - never 47 ÷ 5 - because that is what the current Class 3 book actually asks for. A Class 1 subtraction question never produces a negative number, because negative numbers are not primary maths.
The trade-off is the same one our maths worksheet generator is honest about: the current NCERT books are lighter than what many CBSE schools and most parents’ own memory of school still expect. If your child’s school sets 4-digit multiplication in Class 3 and this sprint only offers tables to 100, that is not an error here - it is the current book being lighter than the classroom.
Class 6 to 10: extended sensibly, kept mental-sized
NCERT’s own scope document only covers primary school, so Class 6 upward is our own judgement call rather than a chapter-by-chapter transcription. The rule we held to: whatever appears has to be genuinely doable in your head inside a few seconds. That rules out factorising a quadratic or proving a geometry result - both need paper and working, and typing the final line into a timer does not test the method, only whether the last step is remembered. What stays in are the pieces that really are mental: integers and simple decimals from Class 6, percentages and one-step algebra from Class 7, squares, cubes, roots and linear equations from Class 8, profit and loss and exponent laws from Class 9, and standard trigonometric ratios, arithmetic progressions, simple interest and probability from Class 10.
One deliberate design choice sits underneath Class 7’s integer multiplication and division: those questions are multiple choice, not typed. The reason is a phone, not pedagogy. Most mobiles switch to a number-only keypad the moment a typed answer is a plain integer, and that keypad has no minus key. Where the sign of the answer is the actual point of the question, tapping one of four options is the only fair way to ask it on a touchscreen.
Why a sprint, and why sixty seconds
Fluency is a different skill from understanding. A child can know exactly why 7 × 8 is 56 and still take four seconds to produce it, and that four seconds is expensive the moment it happens inside a long division or a two-step word problem - the working memory spent recalculating a known fact is memory that is not available for the actual question. Sixty seconds of quick, low-stakes recall, done most days, builds that speed far faster than an occasional long session does.
The clock is not the place to start, though. Run the untimed twenty questions first, every time a new class or a new child sits down. A timer measures how fast an answer comes back, and there is nothing to measure until the answer is reliably there at all.
Reading the end screen
The score matters less than the list underneath it. That list is grouped by topic, and it is your practice plan for tomorrow.
- One topic dominating the list means that specific skill, not the whole class level, is the gap.
- Misses scattered across every topic usually means the class picked is a level too high - try one below.
- Everything right well before the clock runs out means it is time to move up a class.

Is this mental maths sprint free?
Yes, completely. There is no account, no download, no trial and no card. It costs nothing whether or not you ever book a class with us.
Does my child need an account to use it?
No. There is nothing to sign up for. Nothing your child types is stored, no score is kept between visits, and no analytics run on what a child does on this page. That is a deliberate choice, not an oversight - see the privacy policy.
How are the questions kept inside the syllabus for each class?
Every class from 1 to 5 is generated from number ranges taken directly from the current NCERT primary books, checked chapter by chapter - see our maths worksheet generator for the same sourcing. Class 1 never subtracts past a negative result, Class 3 division is always exact because NCERT does not introduce remainders until Class 4, and Class 5 never produces a number in lakhs because the current syllabus does not either. Class 6 to 10 extends the same idea sensibly with integers, percentages, ratio and simple algebra, since NCERT’s own primary scope stops at Class 5.
Why does it stop children typing a minus sign for some questions?
Because most phones switch to a number-only keypad for a plain integer answer, and that keypad has no minus key. Where the sign of the answer is genuinely the point - multiplying or dividing two signed numbers in Class 7 - the question offers four options to tap instead of a box to type into, so a real phone keyboard is never the reason a correct answer gets marked wrong.
Should we use the 60-second timer straight away?
No. Start with no timer at all. A clock measures how fast an answer comes back, and there is nothing to measure until the answer is actually there. Run the untimed twenty questions until your child answers without a visible pause, then switch the 60-second sprint on.
Why does the timer default to 60 seconds and not something longer?
Because that is long enough to see a real pattern in what a child knows without the session dragging into a chore. Sixty seconds of focused recall, done daily, does more for fluency than fifteen minutes done once a week. Ninety seconds and three minutes are there for children who want a longer run once the short one feels easy.
My child is in Class 6 but still shaky on tables. Which should we use?
Pick Class 4 or Class 5 here first, or use our times tables race for pure tables drilling. This tool follows the class you pick rather than testing readiness, so a Class 6 child asked Class 6 questions before tables are automatic will mostly be slowed down by the multiplication inside a percentage or ratio question, not by the percentage or ratio itself.
Why do Class 9 and 10 not go further into algebra and geometry?
Because this is a mental sprint, not a worked-solution tool. Factorising a quadratic or proving a geometry result needs paper and working, and typing the final line of that into a timer does not test the method - it tests whether the child remembers the last step. What is kept here is the part that genuinely is mental: powers, roots, percentages, simple interest, standard trig ratios, arithmetic progressions and probability of the kind that comes up as a quick sub-step inside a longer question.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. It is built for a mid-range Android phone first, with buttons and boxes large enough for a child's thumb, and it works in any modern browser without installing anything.
Can I use it for more than one child?
Yes. Nothing is tied to a device or an account, so open it fresh for each child and pick their class. Because nothing is saved, there is no mixing up of one child's history with another's - there is no history at all.
