Times tables games, all the way to 20

This is a free times tables game that runs in your browser and goes from the 2 times table right up to 20. Pick a range or a single table, choose whether to add a timer, and answer as many as you can. At the end it tells you which tables to work on rather than just handing back a score.

Most free tables tools stop at 12, because they were built for British and American schools where that is where the tradition ends. Indian schools routinely ask for tables to 16 or 20, and children here are made to recite them aloud. That gap is the reason this exists.

How to use it

Ten minutes a day beats an hour on Sunday

Tables are one of the few things in school maths that genuinely respond to repetition. Understanding is not the problem - almost every child understands that 6 times 4 means four sixes. The problem is retrieval speed, and retrieval speed only improves through frequent short practice. Ten minutes daily will do more in a fortnight than two hours on a Sunday will do in a month.

Start untimed, always

The timer is the last thing to switch on, not the first. A clock measures how fast a fact comes back, and there is nothing to measure until the fact is actually there. Run the untimed mode until your child answers without a visible pause. Then add sixty seconds and let them try to beat their own count.

Used too early, a timer teaches a child that they are slow at maths, which is a belief far harder to undo than any table.

Drill the one table they miss

Working through 2 to 20 in order feels productive and mostly is not. Most of that time is spent on the 2s, 5s and 10s, which your child already knows. Use the single-table option instead. When the end screen tells you the table of 7 is where the misses are, do the table of 7 tomorrow.

There are fewer facts than it looks

The tables to 12 contain 121 facts, which sounds enormous to a nine-year- old. It is not really 121. The 1s, 2s, 5s and 10s come almost free. Because 6 × 7 and 7 × 6 are the same fact, half of what remains is a duplicate. What is genuinely left is about 36 facts, and the hard core of those is roughly a dozen: 6×7, 6×8, 7×8, 7×9, 8×9 and their partners.

Telling a child that there are twelve hard ones and they already know everything else changes the size of the task in their head. That alone is worth doing before any practice starts.

The tricks worth teaching

For the 9 times table, the two digits of every answer add up to 9, and the tens digit is one less than the number being multiplied: 9 × 7 = 63, and 6 is one less than 7. For 11 up to 11 × 9, simply repeat the digit. For 19, take twenty lots and subtract one lot - 19 × 6 is 120 minus 6. Children who are frightened of the big tables usually stop being frightened the moment somebody shows them that 19 is just 20 with one taken off.

What the tables look like class by class

In Class 2 the tables of 2, 5 and 10 are built through skip counting, and NCERT builds 4, 6, 7 and 8 by adding two tables together rather than by memorising them. In Class 3 the × symbol appears for the first time and the tables to 10 are consolidated, with no product above 100. Class 4 is where tables need to become automatic, because column multiplication and division with remainders both arrive and neither works if the facts are still being calculated. By Class 5 and 6, schools commonly extend to 20, and slow recall starts costing marks in long division and fractions.

Where a game stops helping

If your child is practising daily and the same facts keep going missing, the issue is usually not effort. It can be that they have never been shown multiplication as an array or as repeated addition, so the facts have nothing to hang on. It can be a much older gap. A game cannot find that. A teacher watching them work for twenty minutes usually can.

Reading the end screen

The score matters less than the list underneath it. That list is grouped by table, and it is your practice plan for tomorrow.

  • One table dominating the list means drill that single table next.
  • Misses scattered across every table usually means the timer went on too early.
  • Missing-number questions failing while straight products succeed means the facts are learnt as a chant, not as facts.
  • Everything right in under a minute means it is time to move up a range.

About the times tables game

Is this times tables game free?

Yes, completely. There is no account, no download, no trial and no card. It costs nothing whether or not you ever book a class with us.

Does my child need an account to use it?

No. There is nothing to sign up for. Nothing your child types is stored, no score is kept between visits, and no analytics run on what a child does on this page. That is a deliberate choice, not an oversight - see the privacy policy.

Why do the tables go to 20 and not 12?

Because Indian schools ask for them. Almost every free tables tool online is British or American and stops at 12, which is where that tradition ends. A child in Class 5 here is often asked to recite up to 16 or 20, so the game covers the full range.

Does NCERT actually require tables up to 20?

No, and it is worth being clear about that. The current NCERT primary books cover tables 1 to 10, and Class 3 keeps every product at or below 100. Tables 11 to 20 come from schools and from parents rather than from the syllabus. They are still useful, and they are still what your child will be asked for, but nobody is failing the syllabus without them. Our maths worksheet generator explains this gap in more detail.

At what age should a child know their tables?

Tables 2, 5 and 10 usually settle in Class 2. Tables 3 and 4 follow, then the harder middle of the set - 6, 7, 8 - through Class 3 and 4. Most children have the tables to 10 secure by the end of Class 4. If your child is in Class 6 and still counting on fingers for 7 times 8, that is worth acting on, but it is common and it is fixable.

Should we use the timer?

Not at first. A timer measures recall, and there is nothing to measure until the recall exists. Use the untimed mode until your child answers without a visible pause, then switch the clock on. Used too early, the timer teaches a child that maths is something they are bad at.

Which table should we start with?

Whichever one they keep missing. Pick the single-table option and drill that one. Working through 2 to 20 in order means spending most of the time on the tables your child already knows, which feels like progress and is not.

Can we print a tables chart?

Yes. The chart lower down this page prints cleanly on one A4 sheet from your browser's print option. Stick it somewhere your child passes several times a day rather than on a study desk they only sit at once.

My child gets them right but very slowly. Is that a problem?

It becomes one. Slow recall is not a crime in itself, but it takes up the working memory a child needs for the actual question. A Class 6 student doing long division while also working out 7 times 8 from scratch will lose track of the division. Speed here buys attention elsewhere - this is one of the commonest reasons a child suddenly struggles in Maths around Class 5 and 6.
