Chemistry for Class 9 and 10 is a language before it is a science, and that is why so many capable students find it slippery. Formulas, valencies, state symbols and balanced equations make up a notation system, and a student who is shaky on the notation cannot express what they understand - which looks, from the outside, exactly like not understanding it. Almost every chemistry difficulty at this level traces back to notation, to the mole, or to reaction types being memorised as a list instead of recognised as patterns.
What the chemistry strand covers at Class 9 and 10
Like physics, chemistry at this stage is a strand inside Science rather than a separate subject, examined in the same paper.
Class 9 works through the nature of matter and its states, mixtures and pure substances and how they are separated, atoms and molecules, and the structure of the atom. It is the foundational year, and it is deceptively quiet - very little of it is hard, and almost all of it is load-bearing.
Class 10 moves to chemical reactions and equations, acids, bases and salts, metals and non-metals, and carbon and its compounds. This is where the load arrives. A student who was vague about valency in Class 9 will find that writing correct formulas in Class 10 has become a weekly problem.
That two-year structure explains the most common shape of chemistry trouble we see: a comfortable Class 9, then a sharp fall in the first term of Class 10. It is very rarely that Class 10 chemistry is hard. It is that Class 9 chemistry was never fully secured, because it did not feel like it needed to be.
NCERT has revised its Class 9 and 10 Science content more than once recently and schools differ on editions, so classes are planned from the contents page of the book your child actually has.
Notation is the whole game
Three things sit underneath almost everything else, and each is worth stopping for.
Valency and formula writing. A student who has memorised that the formula for calcium chloride is CaCl₂ knows one fact. A student who can build it from the valencies can produce a formula for a compound nobody has taught them. The second student is doing chemistry; the first is doing recall, and recall runs out in Class 10.
Balancing equations. This is often taught as a puzzle technique and rarely as a consequence - atoms are not created or destroyed, so the counts must match. Students who understand the reason balance faster and, more importantly, notice when their answer cannot be right.
The mole. This is the idea that most often gets quietly skipped and then breaks everything downstream. A mole is a counting unit, like a dozen - a way of counting particles by weighing them, because particles are too small to count directly. Once that sentence lands, mole calculations become arithmetic. Until it lands, they are magic, and students handle them by pattern-matching to worked examples.
The check for the last one is simple. Ask what a mole actually is. If the answer is a number rather than an idea, that is where to start.
Reaction types are patterns, not a list
A great deal of Class 10 chemistry is learnable as families. Students who memorise individual reactions have to remember dozens of separate facts. Students who learn the families have to remember a handful of patterns and can then predict.
The families worth naming explicitly are combination, decomposition, displacement, double displacement, and reactions involving oxidation and reduction. Alongside those sit the behaviour of acids and bases with metals, with carbonates and with each other, and the reactivity series, which tells you in advance which displacement will happen.
Once a student can classify a reaction on sight, an unfamiliar equation stops being frightening. They may not know that specific reaction, but they know its family, and the family tells them the shape of the answer. That is the moment chemistry starts to feel possible, and it is a teachable moment rather than a talent.
Organic chemistry at Class 10 - carbon compounds - behaves the same way. Learn the structure and the naming rules, and the compounds stop being a list to memorise and become a system you can read.

Chemistry, honestly answered
My child was fine in Class 9 chemistry and fell apart in Class 10.
That is the most common shape of chemistry trouble, and it is rarely because Class 10 is hard. Class 9 chemistry is quiet and load-bearing - atoms, molecules, valency, atomic structure. None of it feels urgent, so it often is not fully secured, and Class 10 spends the whole year building on it. The repair is backwards, not forwards.
