The single most useful thing to settle before any teaching starts, because the two are not interchangeable at the senior end.

The row that costs families most is the second one. A child preparing for Class 10 board exam by working through CBSE past papers is rehearsing for a different examination, and it is a mistake we see regularly. No, and the difference is worth being clear about rather than blurring. Kota's coaching industry is built for senior competitive preparation — large batches, enormous practice volume, ranking pressure — and for a Class 11 or 12 student aiming at a competitive exam it is genuinely effective at what it does.

For a Class 3 or Class 7 child it is the wrong model, and applying it early does real damage. Volume without understanding produces a child who is fast at recognising a question type and cannot explain why the method works, and that ceiling is very hard to break through later. What we do is narrower and slower: one teacher, weekly, working from your child’s own school books, looking for where understanding actually stopped rather than adding practice on top of it. In Rajasthan this sits alongside the Kota effect, and the two get tangled. Families often assume an English problem needs the same treatment as an exam subject — more hours, more drilling. It does not, and drilling the wrong half wastes a term.

The split is diagnostic and takes two minutes at home. Ask your child to read one line from a book she has never seen, with the picture covered. If she cannot get through it, the gap is decoding, and phonics is the honest starting point at any age — a finite job with a visible end, and the shorter route to speaking too, because most speaking in a school happens through reading aloud. If she reads that line adequately but will not answer a question out loud, decoding is fine and the problem is confidence, which needs talk time rather than more reading.

The board is confirmed at the assessment rather than assumed, because at Class 10 an RBSE student and a CBSE student sit different papers with different past papers to practise on. Practising the wrong set is preparation for a different examination, and it is a common and expensive mistake.

Outside Jaipur and Jodhpur the argument for online teaching strengthens: a specialist who knows Class 10 Science to exam depth is far easier to find in a large city, and online removes geography from the question. Class 1 through Class 10 are all covered.
