Number Pop - a maths game for Class 1 to 8

This is a free arcade maths game, not a quiz. Bubbles float up the screen and your child pops only the ones that match the rule - the multiples of 7, the prime numbers, the factors of 36. Ignore one and it escapes. Pop a wrong one and you lose a life. It gets faster the better you do.

The difference from a quiz matters. A quiz waits, so a child can work the answer out and still be right. This does not wait, which is the point: it practises knowing a fact rather than calculating it, and that is the gap between a child who finds Class 4 maths hard and one who does not.

What a wrong pop actually tells you

Watch which bubbles your child hesitates over. Under time pressure a child pops what they know instantly and hesitates over what they are working out - and the ones they work out are exactly the facts that are not yet secure.

That is more useful than a score. A child who scores 20 while hesitating over everything in the seven times table has told you precisely what to practise, and no written test would have shown it, because on paper there is always time to reconstruct the answer.

If wrong pops are frequent, drop a level rather than playing the same one harder. Speeding up a fact that is being calculated does not make it recalled - it just makes the calculation rushed.

Why speed matters, and where it stops mattering

Speed on small number facts is not about being quick for its own sake. It is about what is left over. A child who works out 7 × 8 has spent their working memory on it, and there is none left for the long-division step that needed it - so the mistake appears further down the page, and looks like a division problem.

That is why fact recall is worth drilling and method is not. The target is recognition rather than calculation: 7 × 8 should be recalled like a name, not derived. Below about three seconds it is recall; above about five it is being worked out each time, whatever the child says.

Where speed stops mattering is everything above that. Speed on multi-step problems is a bad goal - it produces children who skip reading the question, which is a far more expensive habit than being slow.

What to drill, by class

Drilling everything drills nothing. At each stage there is a small set of facts that pays for itself and a much larger set that does not.

“Both directions” is the part usually skipped: a child who can recite the seven times table and cannot answer 56 ÷ 7 has learnt a song, not a fact. Times tables drills the recall and the worksheets check whether it survives away from the game.

Is this maths game free?

How is this different from the times tables race?

The times tables race asks a question and waits for an answer, which tests whether your child can work it out. This does not wait - bubbles escape, and the speed climbs. That tests whether they know a fact without working it out, which is the real difference between a child who finds Class 4 maths hard and one who does not.

Why does letting a bubble escape not cost anything?

Because we would rather a child skipped a fact they were unsure of than guessed. Only a wrong pop costs a life, which means the winning strategy is to tap what you know and leave what you do not - and that is also the honest signal about which facts still need work.

My child keeps popping wrong numbers. Is the level too hard?

Probably, and dropping a level is the right response rather than more practice at this one. Wrong pops under time pressure usually mean the fact is being worked out rather than recalled, and speeding that up does not help - securing the fact does.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes, and it is built for it. There is no typing, only tapping, which is what makes it playable in a queue or in a car. Nothing is stored between visits.

Which class is each level for?

Class 1 to 2 covers odd and even, numbers that bond to ten, and simple addition. Class 3 to 5 covers multiples and the tables to twelve. Class 6 to 8 covers primes, factors and square numbers. The labels are guides rather than rules - use whichever level your child can play without guessing.

Does timing my child cause maths anxiety?

It can, if the timer is the point and the score is compared to someone else's. Kept short, framed as a personal best and stopped when it stops being fun, drilling facts to recall reduces anxiety more often than it causes it - most maths anxiety in primary comes from being stuck, and being stuck on 7 x 8 halfway through a division is a common way to get there.

How fast should recall actually be?

Under about three seconds is recall. Above five, the child is working it out each time however confident they sound - and that is the working memory that the rest of the sum needed. That gap is what makes a child slow at long division despite understanding it.

What should we drill at Class 2?

Number bonds to 10 and then 20, doubles, and the 2, 5 and 10 tables. Not the rest of the tables - multiplication as repeated groups needs to be secure before recall is worth building, or the child is memorising something meaningless.

    Tap a bubble that fits the rule. Let the others rise past; escaping costs nothing, so there is no reason to guess.

    Keep the streak alive

    A wrong pop costs one of three lives and resets the streak. The speed climbs with your score, not with the clock.

  • Recognising a fact from the answer end: spotting that 42 belongs in the sevens.
  • Holding a rule in mind while scanning, which is what mental maths in a timed test actually feels like.
  • Restraint. The child who taps everything loses, so leaving an uncertain bubble alone is a scored skill.

When not to use it: If your child is still working answers out on fingers, this will only rush the counting. Secure the facts on paper first, then come back to build speed.
