Most marks lost in the board paper go to presentation - unbalanced equations, unlabelled diagrams, missing units - rather than to not knowing the content.
Look at enough returned Class 10 Science papers and the same thing is visible on almost all of them: the child knew the answer. The equation was right and unbalanced. The ray diagram was correct and had no arrows. The numerical had the right number and no unit. None of that is a content problem, and all of it is worth a great many marks - which is genuinely good news in a board year, because presentation can be fixed in a fortnight and content cannot.

In four places, all of them presentation: unbalanced equations, ray diagrams without arrows or labels, numericals without units, and diagrams with too few labels. Each is full understanding scoring a fraction of what it should.
This is worth checking against a returned paper, because the pattern is usually visible in five minutes.
None of these requires knowing more science. All four can be fixed in a fortnight, which is why they are the first thing worth working on in a board year.
Because the naming is unfamiliar rather than the chemistry difficult. Once a child sees that a name describes a structure - how many carbons, and which functional group - the chapter becomes systematic rather than memorised.
Carbon and its compounds is the chapter most often reported as the hardest, and the reason is almost always nomenclature.
A name like propanol is not a word to remember; it is a description. 'Prop' means three carbons, '-ol' means an alcohol group. Butanoic acid is four carbons with a carboxylic acid group. Once that is understood, a child can name a structure they have never seen and draw one from a name - which is precisely what the paper asks.
What usually happens instead is a table of names memorised without the pattern behind it, and the chapter becomes impossible to reconstruct under exam pressure. Two hours spent on the pattern is worth more than twenty on the table.
Yes - CBSE has rationalised content in recent years, and some chapters and sections have been removed or reduced. Work from the current year's syllabus document rather than from an older book or an older sibling's notes.
This matters practically, not just administratively. Families frequently prepare from material that is a year or two out of date - an older edition, a coaching booklet, notes handed down - and cover chapters that are no longer examinable while missing changes in emphasis elsewhere.
Two habits solve it. Download the current year's syllabus and sample paper from the CBSE academic site at the start of the year, and check any topic against it before spending a weekend on it. It takes ten minutes and it removes a whole category of wasted preparation.
Presentation first, because it is the fastest gain in a board year, then content weighted by which of the three strands is weakest. Past papers are used from the start rather than saved for March.
The first session is short and diagnostic: balance one equation, draw one ray diagram, write one numerical, label one diagram. Fifteen minutes, and it usually shows a child losing marks they had already earned.
After that we work strand by strand rather than chapter by chapter, weighted towards whichever is weakest - a board year has no spare time for covering a healthy strand evenly.
Past papers start early rather than in the last month. Writing to a marking scheme is a skill in itself, and the child who has done it fifteen times by January is in a different position from the one who starts in March.
