Because there are no numericals, children revise it by reading - and lose marks on labelled diagrams and imprecise terms, both of which have to be produced from memory.
Biology is the strand children worry about least and lose marks in most quietly. There is nothing to calculate, so it reads as though it can be revised by going over the chapter, and it cannot. A labelled diagram of the nephron or the human heart has to be drawn from nothing, and a word like translocation cannot be approximated - the mark is for the term, not for the idea near it.

Reading builds recognition, which feels like knowing and disappears the moment a blank page is put in front of the child.
The test that settles it takes two minutes: close the book and ask your child to draw and label the nephron. A child who has revised by reading will produce a rough shape and two labels. A child who has revised by drawing will produce the whole thing.
So the method is to draw the required diagrams repeatedly until they come out complete without reference - the heart, the nephron, the neuron and reflex arc, the flower, the digestive system. There are not many of them, which is what makes this such a good return on the time.
Exactly precise. Transpiration and translocation are different processes, and so are the ureter and the urethra. Examiners mark the term, so a nearly-right word scores nothing even where the surrounding explanation shows the child understood. Spelling matters for the same reason.
This is where biology punishes the child who writes generously and vaguely, and rewards the one who writes briefly and exactly. Long answers that circle the idea without naming it are extremely common in returned papers and they score far below what the child knew.
We treat the vocabulary as a list to be tested aloud rather than as something absorbed from reading, in the same way spellings are tested. It is unglamorous and it moves marks quickly.
Insist on a Punnett square every single time, even when the answer looks obvious. Most lost marks in heredity come from children reasoning the ratio in their head and getting it slightly wrong, when the grid would have produced it correctly and shown the working an examiner can credit.
Heredity is the chapter where a small amount of method covers most of the marks. Draw the square, fill in the gametes, read off the ratio, then state it in words. That works for a monohybrid cross without any real understanding of Mendel, and it works even better with it.

No. Physics, chemistry and biology share one Science paper up to Class 10 and become separate subjects at Class 11. ICSE and some international schools separate them earlier, so check with your child's school.
