Class 10 ICSE tuition: two years of syllabus, one examination

Because the syllabus is written across Class 9 and Class 10 and examined at the end of the second. Class 9 content is examinable content, and nothing in Class 10 revisits it as a matter of course.

This is the structural fact that most distinguishes an ICSE board year, and it catches families who plan it like a CBSE one.

A CBSE Class 10 revision plan can reasonably concentrate on the Class 10 syllabus, since Class 10 has its own. An ICSE plan cannot: the chapters taught in Class 9 are half of what the paper asks about.

The practical consequence is a calendar one. The Class 9 material needs its own scheduled revision slots rather than being assumed, and it needs them early - by the time the Class 10 syllabus is finishing, there is no room left to discover a Class 9 gap.

Because the board rewards a developed point where CBSE rewards a precise one. Correct, tightly written answers leave marks unclaimed, and nothing in them is wrong - which is why the problem is so hard to spot.

This is the commonest way a well-prepared ICSE student underperforms, and it has nothing to do with what they know.

An ICSE answer is expected to state the point, explain it, and where the marks allow, illustrate or extend it. A four-mark question wants four things, developed - not four bullet points. A child coached to write tightly, or taught by someone whose habits come from CBSE, produces answers that a marker cannot award full credit to.

The fix is calibration rather than teaching: write answers against the marking scheme of an actual past paper, and compare. Two or three sessions of that usually resets a child's sense of length permanently.

A substantial share of the final mark in most subjects, accumulated across both years. Confirm the current weighting with your school, since CISCE revises the scheme periodically - but treat it as marks either way.

These are the most controllable marks in the examination and the ones most often surrendered by drift rather than by decision.

Projects are assessed on preparation and presentation, not on brilliance. Practical files are assessed on being current and complete. Neither requires talent; both require doing the work when it is set. A child who starts each project the week it is assigned and keeps the practical file up to date accumulates these marks almost invisibly - and a child who does not spends Class 10 clearing a backlog that competes directly with revision.

With Class 9 revision scheduled explicitly, answer length calibrated against real marking schemes, and the three sciences assessed separately rather than as one impression.

The first session establishes three things: which of the three sciences is weakest, whether answer length matches the board, and whether the Class 9 material is genuinely secure. Twenty minutes, and the year plans itself around whichever of the three is the problem.

Answer calibration happens early rather than late, because it changes how every subsequent piece of practice is written. There is little point writing forty answers at the wrong length and correcting them in February.
