Class 9 ICSE tuition: the course has already started

Because the ICSE syllabus is designed across two years and examined at the end of the second. Class 9 content is examinable content, not groundwork for it, and nothing in Class 10 goes back over it.

This is the structural difference from CBSE and it changes how the year should be treated.

A CBSE family can treat Class 9 as the year before the board year - imperfectly, since Class 10 assumes a great deal, but the Class 10 syllabus is genuinely its own. In ICSE that is not the case. The Class 9 chapters are the first half of what the board examines, and the Class 10 timetable contains no space to revisit them.

The practical consequence is simple. A chapter that is half-learned in Class 9 will be half-learned in the ICSE paper unless the family repairs it themselves, and there is no natural moment in Class 10 when that happens.

A great deal - it contributes a substantial share of the final mark in most subjects, and it begins accumulating in Class 9. Confirm the current weighting with your school, since CISCE revises the scheme periodically.

This is where organised families gain most, because these are the most controllable marks in the whole examination.

Projects and practical work are assessed on preparation and presentation rather than on brilliance, and they are marked over two years rather than in one week. A child who starts each project the week it is set, keeps the practical file current, and submits on time accumulates these marks almost automatically. A child who leaves them accumulates a backlog instead, and backlogs in Class 10 compete with revision.

Because the exact weighting and scheme are revised from time to time, ask your school for the current position rather than relying on what a previous cohort was told.

Letting one of the three sciences drift, and writing answers at the wrong length. ICSE rewards development where CBSE rewards precision, and a correct short answer loses marks without containing anything wrong.

Both are worth naming because both are invisible from a report card.

The three sciences. Physics, Chemistry and Biology are separate subjects with separate teachers, and a child can be strong in two and drifting in the third for a whole year. Check the three marks separately, and check a different skill in each - a written-out numerical, a chemical equation, a labelled diagram.

Answer length. This is the commonest way a well-taught ICSE child underperforms. The board expects a point to be developed - stated, explained, and where the marks allow, illustrated. Tightly written correct answers simply leave marks unclaimed, which is why it is worth asking any prospective teacher which board they usually teach.

As the first half of the board syllabus. Chapters are taught to board standard rather than to the school's annual paper, the three sciences are checked separately, and answer length is matched to ICSE marking from the first session.

Teaching to the school's annual exam is the natural default and it is the wrong target in ICSE, because that paper is easier than the one that eventually counts. We teach Class 9 chapters at the depth the board will ask for, which costs a little more time now and removes an entire category of Class 10 revision.

Since CISCE prescribes a syllabus rather than books, we ask which texts the school uses before the first class and teach in the school's order. We also ask which board a family's other tutors are used to, because mismatched answer length undoes good teaching quietly.
