Class 9 CBSE tuition: the year with no exam and all the weight

Four things, none of which is retaught: the mole concept and atomic structure in chemistry, the motion and force chapters in physics, algebraic and proof fluency in maths, and the writing formats in the languages.

This is the short, specific list a Class 9 family should keep.

• Mole concept and atomic structure. Class 10 chemistry writes in them from the first chapter. See Class 9 Science.
• Motion, force and energy. Class 10 physics builds directly on them, numericals included.
• Proof and algebra. Class 10 geometry is more of the same writing, and Class 10 algebra assumes polynomials are comfortable. See Class 9 maths.
• Writing formats. Letters, paragraphs and analytical writing carry over almost unchanged, and their format marks with them.

A child solid on those four finds Class 10 heavy but orderly. A child missing two of them spends the board year learning Class 9 alongside Class 10.

The school conducts the annual examination, and internal assessment - periodic tests, portfolio, subject enrichment and practical work - contributes alongside it. There is no board examination at this level.

Two practical points follow from this.

The school's own past papers are the thing to prepare against, since the school sets the paper. Sample papers published centrally are useful for the pattern rather than for the questions.

Internal assessment is lost administratively. A portfolio not submitted, a periodic test missed, an enrichment activity skipped - none of these is a failure of understanding, and all of them cost marks. With six subjects each setting their own, a single family calendar is worth more here than any amount of revision.

Schools also apply an attendance requirement for board eligibility. It is applied strictly, and it is worth confirming the current rule with your school rather than assuming.

Five things in twenty-five minutes: one mole calculation, one motion numerical, one geometry proof written out in full, one factorisation, and one formal letter.

Worth doing in the March or April before Class 10, and it decides how the summer is spent.

1. Convert 44 g of carbon dioxide into moles. Does the reasoning exist, or only a formula?
2. One motion numerical, written out. Formula, substitution, units on every line?
3. One proof - the diagonals of a parallelogram bisect each other. Is there a figure? Is there a reason beside each step?
4. Factorise a cubic using the factor theorem. Comfortable, or guessing?
5. One formal letter. Subject line, salutation, closing - all present?

Whatever comes back weak is what the summer is for, and a summer is a far cheaper place to fix it than a board year.

As the first half of a two-year run rather than as a standalone year. What Class 10 will assume gets taught to fluency; what it will retire gets taught to the paper.

The difference shows most in the science strands and in geometry. There is no value in a child scraping through the mole concept in Class 9 and meeting it again in Class 10 as an assumption, so we teach it until it is genuinely comfortable even when the Class 9 paper would have accepted less.
