In CBSE these are units inside one Science course rather than a separate paper. The real change this year is the standard: an answer with the right number and no unit, or a graph with unlabelled axes, is now marked wrong rather than nearly right.
Up to Class 8, physics is mostly description - what happens, and roughly why. Class 9 is where it becomes quantitative, and the standard changes with it. A child who writes 20 instead of 20 m/s has not made a small slip; they have written something that is not an answer to the question. Almost every parent who contacts us about Class 9 physics describes a child who understands the idea and is losing marks anyway, and that is nearly always what is happening.

Because in Class 9 a physical quantity without a unit is not an answer. Examiners mark the whole statement, so 20 instead of 20 m/s scores nothing for the final step, however sound the working. The same applies to unlabelled graph axes and to a diagram without arrows.
This is the single most common thing parents bring to us at this level, and it is genuinely good news, because it is a habit rather than a gap. A child who understands motion and writes bare numbers needs one fortnight of correction, not a term of re-teaching.
The habit that fixes it is writing every numerical the same way every time. It also earns method marks when the arithmetic goes wrong, which is why it is worth insisting on even when the child finds it slow.

That last row is the one that surprises able children most. A confident student who does it in their head and writes only the answer scores below a slower one who set it out - and the gap widens through Class 10, where the numericals get longer.
Gravitation, because mass and weight are used interchangeably in speech and cannot be in physics. Then Newton's third law, because equal and opposite sounds as though the forces should cancel. Motion graphs come third, where a velocity-time graph gets read as a distance-time one.
The errors are predictable enough to name in advance, which means they can be pre-empted rather than corrected after a test.

Every one of those is a definition problem rather than a calculation problem, which is why extra numerical practice does not shift them.
Not in CBSE. Physics, chemistry and biology are strands within a single Science course and a single paper up to Class 10; they become separate subjects in Class 11. Some ICSE and international schools do separate them earlier, so check with your child's school before assuming either way.
We mention this because it changes how you should think about revision. If physics, chemistry and biology share one paper, then a child who is strong in two strands and weak in one still carries that weakness into the same three hours - and the marks lost there cannot be made up elsewhere.
It also means a "physics tutor" for Class 9 is really a science teacher working on the physics units. That is what we provide, and if the actual weakness turns out to be in chemistry we will say so after the assessment rather than teach around it. The whole subject is on our Class 9 Science page.
A great deal, and more than any other Class 9 strand. Class 10 physics is largely light, electricity and magnetism, all of which assume the quantitative habits built in Class 9 - formula, substitution, units, and reading a graph. A child who never formed those habits meets them again in a board year.
Class 10 does not revisit motion or gravitation, so it is tempting to treat Class 9 physics as finished business. The topics are finished; the method is not. Electricity in Class 10 is one long sequence of numericals with units, and the child who lost marks for bare numbers in Class 9 will lose them again in a board paper unless the habit was fixed.
That is the strongest argument for taking Class 9 seriously rather than starting in Class 10, and it is the argument we would make even to a family who did not use us. What Class 10 covers is on the Class 10 physics page.
Definitions first, then one worked numerical set out in full, then the child works the next one the same way while the teacher watches. The watching is the point: most errors at this level are in how the work is laid out, and they are invisible in a marked book after the fact.
A concrete example of what an hour looks like. A child stuck on gravitation does not start with problems. They start by saying, in their own words, what mass is and what weight is, and giving the unit of each. Until that is automatic, every numerical is a coin toss.
Then one worked example, set out as given, formula, substitution, answer with unit. Then the child does the next one in the same shape while the teacher watches the page rather than the result - because a child who writes the formula last, or who works in their head and back-fills, will pass that question and fail the paper.
Groups are one to three, so watching is possible. In a batch of twenty it is not, which is the honest reason batch tuition rarely fixes this particular problem.
Three things, none of which need any physics from you. Ask your child to read their own answer aloud and check every number has a unit. Ask them to explain one law in plain words. And ask what the slope of their graph means. A child who cannot answer those has found their own gap.
Parents often assume they cannot help with secondary science. For the specific errors that dominate Class 9 physics marks, you can - because they are errors of presentation and definition, not of physics.

We can, but we will tell you honestly after the assessment if the real weakness is elsewhere in the Science paper. Teaching one strand while another is failing does not help a child who sits a single combined paper.
About ninety minutes of focused work across the week for the physics strand alone, on top of homework - and it should be spent on numericals worked out on paper rather than on re-reading the chapter. A child who reads physics rather than writing it will pass the definitions and lose the calculations.
Almost always because physics numericals arrive wrapped in words and units, while maths ones do not. The arithmetic is easy for such a child; deciding which formula the situation calls for, and carrying units through it, is the actual skill - and it is taught far less explicitly.
It still counts in the Class 9 result and it still feeds Class 10, which is a board year. Beyond that, the habits it builds - stating a quantity with its unit, reading a graph, setting work out so an error can be found - transfer to economics, geography and anything with data in it.
For CBSE, a science teacher who can work on the physics units, because your child sits one paper across all three strands. If the marks are actually going in chemistry, a physics tutor will not find that. The assessment looks at the whole paper first and then says where the hour is best spent.
Setting every numerical out as given, formula, substitution, answer with unit - without exception, including in rough work. It takes a fortnight to become automatic, it earns method marks when the arithmetic slips, and it makes the child's own errors visible to them, which nothing else does.
Class 9 carries internal assessment that includes practical work, and the weighting is set by the school within CBSE's scheme. Ask your school for the current split rather than relying on last year's - it varies, and it is the kind of detail worth confirming rather than assuming.
