Class 2 is the last year of the NEP 2020 Foundational Stage, and NCERT's Joyful Mathematics keeps the ceiling low on purpose: numbers stop at 100, not 999. A sum like 57 + 34 is split - 57 + 30 + 4 - and worked on a number line, never carried in a column. Tables of 2, 3, 5 and 10 are built directly; 4, 6, 7 and 8 are derived. What does Class 2 maths actually cover?

Class 2 maths, from Joyful Mathematics, stays within numbers to 100 - not 999 - and covers addition by splitting tens and units, every table to 10 built or derived, division as equal sharing with no ÷ sign, money to ₹500 including paise, and a clock read only to the hour and half hour.

NCERT's current Class 2 book is Joyful Mathematics, and the ceiling for the year is lower than most parents expect: numbers stop at 100, not 999.

  • Numbers to 100. Reading, writing, comparing and place value in tens and units.
  • Addition by splitting. 57 + 34 becomes 57 + 30 + 4, then 87 + 4 on a number line - never a written column.

Parents who remember three-digit sums or division signs from their own Class 2 are remembering an older syllabus.

Why is Class 2 addition done by splitting instead of carrying?

NCERT's method for two-digit sums like 57 + 34 breaks the second number into tens and units - 57 + 30 + 4 - and works step by step on a number line, ending at 91. This shows the tens and units, which a written carry hides. The column method with carrying arrives later, in Class 4.

A sum such as 57 + 34 could be taught with a written column and a carried digit, the way many parents learned it. NCERT's Class 2 book deliberately does not do this yet.

Instead, the second number is split into tens and units: 57 + 34 becomes 57 + 30 + 4. The child adds the tens - 57 + 30 = 87 - then the units - 87 + 4 = 91 - tracking each jump on a number line. Nothing is carried, because there is no column.

A written carry hides what is happening underneath. Splitting keeps that visible, so a child who gets 91 understands why. The standard column method arrives in Class 4 - and even there, NCERT calls it “regrouping”, not “carrying”.

So a Class 2 child splitting 57 + 34 is doing exactly what this year's syllabus asks. A worksheet expecting a carried column tests a Class 4 method early.

How does Class 2 teach tables and division without formal symbols?

Only the tables of 2, 3, 5 and 10 are built directly, from arrays of real objects. The remaining four - 4, 6, 7 and 8 - are derived by adding two known tables, so the table of 7 comes from 3 plus 4. Division stays as physical, exact sharing, with no ÷ sign until Class 3.

Class 2 does not simply hand a child ten tables to memorise. Four - 2, 3, 5 and 10 - are built directly, laid out as arrays of real objects: two rows of six, three rows of four, until the pattern is something she has physically made.

The remaining four - 4, 6, 7 and 8 - are then derived rather than built from scratch. The table of 7 comes from adding the table of 3 to the table of 4. By year's end every table to 10 is covered, but a child who forgets a line can rebuild it, rather than getting stuck.

Division follows the same concrete-first approach. There is no ÷ sign in Class 2. A child shares a group of objects equally among friends and says how many each one gets. The sharing is always exact; leftovers are a Class 4 idea. The ÷ symbol does not appear until Class 3.

How do we teach Class 2 maths tuition?

Two-digit addition is practised by splitting a number into tens and units, with real bundles of ten, before it is written down. Tables are built from arrays first and derived once the base tables are solid. Division stays as physical sharing all year, and real coins bring paise into every money lesson.

A Class 2 class works almost entirely with real objects and a number line, not a page of written sums. Splitting a two-digit addition is practised with real bundles of ten, so 57 + 34 is something a child lays out before she writes it.

Tables are built from arrays first - rows of real counters - and derived into the harder ones once the base tables are solid. We test whether a child can rebuild a table, not only recite it, because reciting alone breaks the moment a line is forgotten. Division stays as physical sharing throughout the year, always exact.

Where it usually goes wrong

  • Adds 57 + 34 by lining the digits up in a column and carrying, a method the class has not taught, because an older workbook or app showed it first.
  • Recites the table of 7 from memory but cannot rebuild it from the table of 3 and table of 4 if a step is forgotten mid-recitation.
  • Shares nine objects among two friends and cannot say what to do with the one left over, because Class 2 sharing is always exact.
  • Confuses rupees and paise when both appear in the same amount.
  • Reads “half past” correctly but guesses at any other clock position, because only o’clock and half past are taught this year.

Why does my Class 2 child solve 57 + 34 without carrying?

Because Class 2's NCERT syllabus teaches two-digit addition by splitting the second number into tens and units - 57 + 30 + 4 - worked on a number line, not carried in a column. This keeps the tens and units visible. The formal column method arrives in Class 4.

Should my Class 2 child know all the tables up to 10 by heart?

By year's end, yes, but the route matters. NCERT builds 2, 3, 5 and 10 directly, then derives 4, 6, 7 and 8 by adding two known tables - 7 comes from 3 plus 4. A child who has only memorised the chant has not fully met the outcome.

Does Class 2 maths use the ÷ sign?

No. Class 2 division is equal sharing only - a child shares objects among friends, always exactly, with no symbol attached. The ÷ sign is introduced in Class 3, once sharing is completely secure. A Class 2 child with no exposure to ÷ has nothing to catch up on.

Why does Class 2 use paise when no other primary class does?

Class 2 money work runs to ₹500 and is the only year that includes paise alongside rupees. From Class 3 onward, measurement and money stay in whole units - rupees, metres, kilograms - so paise disappears from the syllabus after this year.

My Class 2 child can only read o’clock and half past on a clock. Is that normal?

Yes, exactly the Class 2 scope. This year only asks a child to read a clock showing an exact hour or a half hour. Quarter past, quarter to and minute-level reading are not part of Class 2 at all this year.

Is Class 2 maths harder than Class 1?

Not harder, differently shaped. Numbers only grow from 99 to 100, but the method changes: sums are split rather than counted on fingers, all ten tables appear, and division begins as sharing. A child comfortable in Class 1 usually adapts quickly.
