NCERT's current Class 2 book is Joyful Mathematics, and the ceiling for the year is lower than most parents expect: numbers stop at 100, not 999.
Parents who remember three-digit sums or division signs from their own Class 2 are remembering an older syllabus.
NCERT's method for two-digit sums like 57 + 34 breaks the second number into tens and units - 57 + 30 + 4 - and works step by step on a number line, ending at 91. This shows the tens and units, which a written carry hides. The column method with carrying arrives later, in Class 4.
A sum such as 57 + 34 could be taught with a written column and a carried digit, the way many parents learned it. NCERT's Class 2 book deliberately does not do this yet.
Instead, the second number is split into tens and units: 57 + 34 becomes 57 + 30 + 4. The child adds the tens - 57 + 30 = 87 - then the units - 87 + 4 = 91 - tracking each jump on a number line. Nothing is carried, because there is no column.
A written carry hides what is happening underneath. Splitting keeps that visible, so a child who gets 91 understands why. The standard column method arrives in Class 4 - and even there, NCERT calls it “regrouping”, not “carrying”.
So a Class 2 child splitting 57 + 34 is doing exactly what this year's syllabus asks. A worksheet expecting a carried column tests a Class 4 method early.

The remaining four - 4, 6, 7 and 8 - are then derived rather than built from scratch. The table of 7 comes from adding the table of 3 to the table of 4. By year's end every table to 10 is covered, but a child who forgets a line can rebuild it, rather than getting stuck.
Division follows the same concrete-first approach. There is no ÷ sign in Class 2. A child shares a group of objects equally among friends and says how many each one gets. The sharing is always exact; leftovers are a Class 4 idea. The ÷ symbol does not appear until Class 3.
Two-digit addition is practised by splitting a number into tens and units, with real bundles of ten, before it is written down. Tables are built from arrays first and derived once the base tables are solid. Division stays as physical sharing all year, and real coins bring paise into every money lesson.
A Class 2 class works almost entirely with real objects and a number line, not a page of written sums. Splitting a two-digit addition is practised with real bundles of ten, so 57 + 34 is something a child lays out before she writes it.

No. Class 2 division is equal sharing only - a child shares objects among friends, always exactly, with no symbol attached. The ÷ sign is introduced in Class 3, once sharing is completely secure. A Class 2 child with no exposure to ÷ has nothing to catch up on.
Class 2 money work runs to ₹500 and is the only year that includes paise alongside rupees. From Class 3 onward, measurement and money stay in whole units - rupees, metres, kilograms - so paise disappears from the syllabus after this year.
Yes, exactly the Class 2 scope. This year only asks a child to read a clock showing an exact hour or a half hour. Quarter past, quarter to and minute-level reading are not part of Class 2 at all this year.
Not harder, differently shaped. Numbers only grow from 99 to 100, but the method changes: sums are split rather than counted on fingers, all ten tables appear, and division begins as sharing. A child comfortable in Class 1 usually adapts quickly.
