Class 5 is the year that most surprises parents, because it is lighter than most of us expect. NCERT's book, Maths Mela, caps numbers at 99,999 - no lakhs, no crores - and still contains no decimals; that idea, with fraction addition, is held back for Class 6. What it does add is real: equivalent and comparing fractions, numerator and denominator finally named; factors and multiples, though not HCF or LCM; area by counting squares; and a first bar graph.

No. The current NCERT Class 5 book stops at 99,999 and contains no decimals at all - no tenths, no hundredths, nothing written with a decimal point. Both lakhs and decimals begin in Class 6. This is a genuine change from older editions and most private-publisher books, not a gap in your child's preparation.
This is the question we are asked most often about Class 5, and the honest answer runs against what most parents remember. NCERT's current book stops at 99,999, reaching only the Ten Thousands place. Lakhs and crores do not appear anywhere in the primary syllabus.
Decimals are the same story. The current books contain none at all, in any of Classes 1 to 5 - no tenths, no hundredths, nothing with a decimal point. An older edition of the Class 5 book did include a chapter on tenths and hundredths; the current one dropped it entirely. Both decimals and lakhs begin in Class 6, alongside fraction addition.
Most private publishers used in CBSE schools, and most parents' own memory of school, put decimals and lakhs in Class 4 or 5. If your child's tuition looks lighter than what you did at that age, that is likely the current syllabus, not a gap.
A shape is drawn over squared paper, and a child finds its area by counting the whole squares it covers and working out the partial ones at the edges, without multiplying length by width. The formula belongs to secondary school; Class 5 area is a counting skill, built on Class 4's perimeter.
Class 4 introduced perimeter - adding up the sides of a shape. Class 5 introduces area, and it is worth being precise about how it is taught, since it is not the method most adults learned.
NCERT's approach to area is entirely about counting squares on a grid. A shape is drawn over squared paper, and a child counts how many whole squares it covers, then works out the partial squares at the edges - usually by pairing two half-squares into one. The answer comes out in square units, arrived at by counting, never by multiplying length by width.
The length-times-width formula belongs to secondary school. Teaching it early tends to produce a child who can produce the right number for a rectangle without any sense of what area measures, which breaks down once the shape is not a neat rectangle. Counting squares gives a working definition of area before a shortcut.
Alongside this year's content, we check that tables, regrouping, division with remainders and place value are solid, since Class 6 assumes every one. Fractions are taught as comparison and equivalence only, area is built from counting real squared paper, and we set out, near year's end, what Class 6 will add.
Class 5 sits before the biggest jump in the whole of primary and middle school, so alongside this year's content, we check everything underneath is solid. Tables, regrouping, division with remainders and place value get revisited if a class needs it, since Class 6 assumes every one.
Fractions are taught as comparison and equivalence only - no addition, because Class 5 does not ask for it - using folded paper so “equivalent” is something a child can see. Area is built from counting squares on real paper before it is discussed in the abstract. Factors and multiples come through arrays, without HCF or LCM.
We are honest about what is coming. A short conversation near year's end sets out what Class 6 will add - decimals, fraction addition, negative numbers - so the jump is expected. Classes run with a matched teacher, with a note home after each class.
