Opposites and one-to-many words
Class 2 English · Vocabulary · 50 questions with answers
Two vocabulary jobs that Class 2 books set together: the opposite of a word, and turning one into many. The second is where the marks are actually lost, because most children learn 'add s' and then meet box, baby and child.
- Gives the opposite of a common word
- Forms a plural by adding -s, and knows when -es is needed instead
- Recognises the plurals that follow no rule at all

box -> boxes, not boxs. Say boxs aloud - it cannot be said. That is the whole reason for -es: words ending in x, s, sh or ch need the extra sound. For baby -> babies, the y becomes i first. Saying it aloud settles almost every one of these.

child -> children, not childs and not childrens. These ten have to be remembered rather than worked out, so treat them as spellings, not as grammar. Sheep and fish do not change at all - one sheep, ten sheep.

While your child works
- For opposites, accept any correct alternative. Shut and close are both the opposite of open, and marking one wrong teaches a child that there is a secret list.
- The -es rule is best taught by ear, not by list. Ask your child to say 'boxs' aloud - they will hear why it needs the extra sound.
- Childrens and mens are the two most common errors of this year. They come from applying the rule twice, which means the rule is understood - just say the correct form and move on.
