Why does my child forget everything right after the exam?

Because the material was memorised as a list of separate facts to get through one exam, not connected to anything your child already understood - and once the exam is over, there is no reason for a brain to keep holding onto information that was never linked to anything else. This is one of the most common things parents tell us, across every subject and every board: strong marks in the test, and almost nothing left three weeks later.

The good news, and it is genuinely good news, is that this is not a sign of a memory problem. It is a sign of a study-method problem, and study methods can be changed, at any class level, starting this week. This post works through why fast forgetting happens, why it is not entirely your child's fault, and what you can actually do about it at home - including a weekly structure you can start using tonight rather than a general principle you have to translate into a plan yourself.

Is something wrong with my child's memory?

No. This is the first thing worth ruling out, and the first thing most parents quietly worry about - and it is almost never the answer. A child's memory is not a fixed-size container that happens to be smaller or weaker than another child's. What actually determines whether something is remembered a month later is not how much "memory capacity" a child has. It is whether that piece of information was ever connected to something else the child already knew, or recalled more than once over time.

Think about what your child never forgets, without ever "revising" it: the route to a best friend's house, the rules of a game played every weekend, which characters exist in a show watched a dozen times. None of that was crammed the night before anything. It was encountered repeatedly, spread out over days and weeks, and connected to things that already mattered - a friend, a game, a story. That is exactly the same brain that forgets a geography chapter within three weeks of an exam. The difference is not the child. It is how the material was handled the first time round.

This isn't a new observation, either - psychologists have studied how quickly freshly learned information fades without reinforcement since the late 1800s, and the basic pattern holds up: information encountered only once decays fast, while information revisited before it's fully forgotten decays far more slowly each time after that. Your child's experience of the exam - remembering everything on the day, and very little three weeks later - is exactly what that pattern predicts, not a personal failure of memory.

This matters because it changes where you look for a fix. If the problem is your child's memory, the natural response is more of the same kind of studying - reading the chapter one more time, one more late night before the test. If the problem is method, which it almost always is, the fix looks completely different, and it is what the rest of this post is about.

What's actually happening when a child crams and forgets?

When a child crams, facts usually get memorised in the order they appear on the page, as isolated items, with little thought about how any of them connect to each other or to something already understood. A date gets attached to an event, a formula gets attached to a question type, a definition gets attached to a word - each pairing learned on its own, held in mind just long enough to write it down in the exam hall, then let go.

Compare that to a fact your child genuinely understands rather than merely memorised - say, why ice floats on water, once they have actually grasped that ice is less dense than liquid water. That one piece of understanding lets them answer several different questions: why icebergs float, why a frozen bottle of water expands, why a lake freezes on top rather than all the way through. One understood idea does the work of several memorised facts, and because it is connected to other things they know - what "dense" means, what happens when things float - it has several hooks holding it in place. A fact memorised on its own has exactly one hook: "this was on the page I read last night." Remove the exam, and that hook is gone.

This is really the whole explanation, and it is worth sitting with, because it changes what "more practice" should actually mean. More practice of the wrong kind - rereading the same page, copying a definition out five times - adds more weight to a fact that still has only one hook. It does not add hooks. Is this my child's fault, or how they were taught to study?

Neither, really - and it is worth saying that plainly rather than dancing around it. Cramming works, in the narrow sense that it produces marks, and a fair amount of how Indian schooling and coaching is structured - frequent unit tests, a packed syllabus covered at pace, exam weeks that reward whatever was read most recently - ends up rewarding exactly the kind of last-minute memorising that does not last. That is not a conspiracy, and it is not a failure of any particular school or teacher. It is what happens when the thing being measured, a mark this week, and the thing that actually matters, understanding that lasts months, quietly drift apart, and a busy system keeps optimising for the one it can see and grade.

Your child has picked up cramming for the same reason almost every child does: it is the fastest way to get through a syllabus by Friday, and nobody sat down and taught an alternative that fits inside the same amount of time. That is not laziness on their part, and it is not something to be angry with a teacher about either. It is a genuinely common gap between how a school week is structured and how memory actually works. The point of this post is not to relitigate that gap. It is to hand you a handful of techniques your child can use inside the same amount of study time, that happen to produce learning which survives past the exam instead of evaporating the day after it.

It can help to say this out loud to your child too, rather than only to yourself: "the way you've been studying isn't wrong because you're not trying hard enough - it's just the fastest way to get through a chapter, and now we're going to try something that takes about the same time but actually stays with you." That framing keeps blame out of a conversation that too easily turns into one, on both sides.

What's the difference between cramming and actually learning?

It helps to see the two side by side, because from a distance they can look identical - a child sitting with a book, apparently studying. The difference is entirely in what is happening inside that hour, not how it looks from the doorway.

The uncomfortable part of this table is the third row: cramming genuinely does feel more productive while it's happening, which is exactly why children - and plenty of adults - keep choosing it. Actual learning feels slower and less certain in the moment, because retrieving something from memory is harder than simply rereading it, and that difficulty is easy to mistake for "this isn't working." What is retrieval practice, and why does it beat rereading notes?

Retrieval practice means closing the book and trying to answer without looking, then checking - rather than reading the answer over and over until it feels familiar. It feels harder while it's happening, and that difficulty is exactly the point: the effort of pulling a fact out of memory is what builds a stronger hook for it, in a way that simply seeing the fact again does not.

This is not a hunch - it is one of the most replicated findings in learning research. In studies comparing students who reread a passage against students who were tested on it without looking, the group that was tested remembered significantly more a week later, even though both groups spent the same amount of time studying, and even though the rereading group often felt more confident right afterwards (Roediger & Karpicke, 2006). Feeling confident immediately after studying and actually remembering something weeks later turn out to be two different things, and cramming optimises for the first at the expense of the second.

This works differently at different ages, but the underlying action is the same: recall, then check, rather than reread. A Class 2 or 3 child does this best out loud - retelling a story, naming shapes from memory, chanting a times table with the book closed rather than open. A Class 8, 9 or 10 student can do the same thing more independently - covering the answer column in a textbook and writing out an answer before checking it, or working through last year's questions from memory rather than reading through solved examples one more time.

In practice, this needs no special material. Instead of "read the chapter again," ask your child to close the book and explain what the chapter covered, in their own words, or answer three questions from the end of the chapter from memory before checking. What is spaced repetition, and what's a realistic weekly plan at home?

Spaced repetition means spreading the same material over several days rather than one sitting, with a bit of forgetting allowed to happen in between - that small gap is what makes each recall slightly effortful, and effortful recall is what strengthens a memory. A large analysis pooling data from hundreds of experiments on distributed practice found that spacing out study sessions consistently produced better long-term retention than the same total study time crammed into one session, and the pattern held up across ages and types of material (Cepeda, Pashler, Vul, Wixted & Rohrer, 2006).

At home, this does not need an app or a formal schedule. A simple weekly rhythm covers it, and it fits inside the time most families already spend on revision - just arranged differently across the week instead of saved for the end of it.

What is elaboration, and how do I get my child to explain the why, not just the what?

Elaboration means explaining why something is true, or how it connects to something already known, rather than simply stating what it is. "Photosynthesis is how plants make food using sunlight" is a fact. "Plants need food just like we do, but they can't eat, so they make their own out of sunlight, water and air - that's why they need to be near a window" is the same fact, elaborated, connected to something a child already understands: that living things need food.

A major review of learning techniques, weighing evidence from hundreds of studies, rated this kind of elaboration - explaining the why, or putting a new idea into one's own words - among the more reliably effective techniques for genuine, lasting learning, well above rereading and highlighting, which the same review rated as low-utility despite being what most students actually do when left to choose their own method (Dunlosky, Rawson, Marsh, Nathan & Willingham, 2013).

The easiest way to get a child doing this at home, without turning it into a lecture, is to swap what you ask for:

None of these questions require you to know the answer yourself - "I don't know, tell me" is a completely fine response, and it often gets a child talking more, not less. How do I know if my child is cramming or really understanding?

A few plain signs, checkable at home without any special test, over a week or two of ordinary homework and conversation.

A child can be genuinely hardworking and still be cramming, simply because cramming is what they were shown how to do, and nobody has yet shown them an alternative that fits into the same evening. Does this mean Indian schools are teaching it wrong?

Not exactly, and it is worth resisting the urge to turn this into a verdict on schools in general. Most teachers know that understanding matters more than memorising, and they are working inside a syllabus, a class size and an exam calendar they did not design. What is true is that the way marks are currently earned in much of Indian schooling - frequent unit tests, a packed syllabus, exam weeks bunched close together - makes cramming the path of least resistance for a busy student, even when a child's own teacher would rather they understood the material properly.

This is not only a parent's private frustration, either. The National Education Policy 2020 names rote learning directly as something Indian education should move away from, in favour of conceptual understanding and the ability to apply what has been learned - which tells you this is a recognised, named problem at the policy level, not something you are imagining or overreacting to.

None of that changes what you can do this week, though. Waiting for the system to change at its own pace is not a plan for this term's exam. Won't spaced revision take more time than cramming?

Not in total, and this is worth addressing directly because it's the practical objection every parent has once the idea makes sense: surely five short sessions add up to more time than one long one? In practice, it tends to be close to the same total time, or even less, because a lot of what makes a single cramming session take so long is rereading material that was never properly understood the first time - the child keeps going back over the same paragraph because none of it stuck.

What actually changes is where the time sits in the week, not how much of it there is. Ten minutes of active recall, three times across a week, plus a slightly shorter final review the night before, tends to add up to roughly what one long cramming session already took - it is simply spread out instead of stacked into a single evening under pressure. And because each of those short sessions is doing real work rather than passive rereading, less gets forgotten between them, which means less needs to be relearned from scratch each time - the opposite of how cramming compounds, where a chapter half-forgotten by the next unit test has to be reread almost entirely again.

Is cramming ever okay, like the night before an exam?

Yes, as a final polish on material already learned properly across the weeks before - not as the first time the material is being learned. A quick review the night before an exam works well when it's the fifth or sixth time a topic has been touched. It works badly when it's the first and only time, because there has been no earlier retrieval to build on.

My child scores well by cramming. Why change something that's working?

Because it's working for one exam, not for the subject. Cramming produces marks in the short term but leaves very little behind for the next unit, the next year, or a board exam that draws on several years of material at once. How long before spaced revision actually shows results?

No. These techniques work at any point in the year, including close to a board exam, because they don't require starting over - they simply change how the remaining revision time is used. Switching from rereading to self-testing and spacing out the topics left to cover, even with a few weeks left, tends to produce better retention than the same hours spent rereading notes.

My child says explaining things out loud feels embarrassing or pointless. What do I do?

Start smaller than a full explanation - ask one specific question rather than 'explain this chapter to me,' and accept a short, imperfect answer without correcting every detail at first. The goal early on is to build the habit of retrieving rather than to get a polished explanation. It also helps to do it yourself sometimes, explaining something you learned recently, so it feels like a normal thing families do rather than a test aimed only at them.

Is this what NEP 2020 means by moving away from rote learning?

Broadly, yes. The National Education Policy 2020 names rote learning as something Indian education should move away from, in favour of conceptual understanding - which is the same distinction this post makes between memorising disconnected facts and actually understanding material.
