A child can get through Class 6 integers on a number line, counting steps left and right. Multiplication breaks that, because there is nothing to count - the sign has to come from a rule that is understood rather than remembered. This sheet works through the rule, then mixes operations so the rule has to be chosen rather than applied automatically.

Here’s one done for you

(-3) × (-4) = 12. Count the negative signs: there are two. An even number of negatives gives a positive answer; an odd number gives a negative one. That single rule covers multiplication and division both, and it is worth saying out loud a few times rather than memorising four separate cases.

Here’s one done for you

(-8) + (-3) × 2 = -14. The trap is doing it left to right and getting (-11) × 2 = -22. Multiplication comes before addition, so (-3) × 2 = -6 first, and then (-8) + (-6) = -14. When signs and order of operations arrive in the same question, work out the order first and the signs second - trying to do both at once is where the errors come from.

Here’s one done for you

The submarine: descending is negative, so 5 m down for 8 minutes is (-5) × 8 = -40, which is 40 m below the surface. Notice the two separate decisions - first which direction counts as negative, then the arithmetic. Children who go straight to the numbers usually get the size right and the sign wrong, and the sign is half the mark.

While your child works

  • If your child hesitates on a sign, ask them to count the negative signs out loud. Even means positive, odd means negative - one rule instead of four.
  • Mixed questions are the real test. Ask 'what do we do first?' before any arithmetic happens.
  • In word problems, ask 'which direction is negative here?' first. That decision made explicitly fixes most sign errors.

Class 7 Maths - the guide

What changes in maths at Class 7?

Class 6 introduced integers, algebra and ratio. Class 7 tests whether any of it was understood, and it does so without announcing itself.

Integers stop being countable. Addition and subtraction can be survived on a number line by counting steps. Multiplication cannot - there is nothing to count, so the sign has to come from a rule. A child who got through Class 6 by counting meets a wall in the first month.

Equations stop being guessable. x + 7 = 12 can be seen. 3x + 4 = x + 10 cannot, and a child who never learned the method now needs it in a hurry.

Percentage becomes about what it is a percentage of. Profit percent is on the cost price and discount is on the marked price, and taking it of the wrong number produces an answer that looks perfectly reasonable.

How should we use these at home?

Twenty-five to thirty minutes each, once or twice a week. Every exercise opens with one question worked through in full, because the method is what is being practised rather than the arithmetic.

  • Ask 'what did you do to both sides?' rather than 'what is the answer?'. That question is the whole difference between method and guessing.
  • Ask 'a percentage of what?' before any division in the profit and loss sheet.
  • Substitute the answer back in every equation. Ten seconds, and it catches nearly every slip.
  • Let your child mark their own work. Every answer is on the page for exactly that reason.

Where do Class 7 children usually stall?

Three places, and each one is a Class 6 idea that was memorised rather than understood.

  • Signs under multiplication. A child who hesitates before writing the sign is guessing. Counting the negative signs - even is positive, odd is negative - replaces four remembered cases with one rule.
  • Equations with the variable on both sides. There is nothing to see, so the method has to exist. This is where guessing runs out.
  • Percentage of the wrong quantity. Dividing by the selling price rather than the cost price gives a plausible wrong answer, which is why it survives unnoticed for a whole term.

Why does my child suddenly struggle with integers in Class 7?

Because Class 6 could be survived by counting steps on a number line, and multiplication cannot. The sign now has to come from a rule. Counting the negative signs - even means positive, odd means negative - is the one rule that replaces all four cases.

My child gets equations right but cannot explain them. Is that a problem?

In Class 7, yes. Guessing works while the numbers are small and fails the moment a variable appears on both sides. It is much easier to build the method while the questions are still easy enough to guess.

Why is profit percent so often wrong?

Because it is calculated on the selling price instead of the cost price. Profit percent is always on the cost price. The wrong answer is close enough to look right, so it can survive a whole term unnoticed.
