Is my child scared of maths, or bad at it?

They look the same on a report card and they are completely different problems. The distinguishing test is simple: can your child do the work when nothing is at stake? A child who solves a question at the kitchen table on a Sunday and freezes on the identical question in a test is not weak at maths. They are anxious about it, and their marks are measuring the anxiety rather than the maths.

This matters because of a genuinely counterintuitive mechanism. Anxiety is not just unpleasant - it occupies working memory, the same limited resource maths requires. A child worrying about getting it wrong has less capacity available for the calculation itself, so they perform below their real ability and then read that performance as proof that they are bad at maths. The belief creates more anxiety, which consumes more capacity, which produces worse results.

Plenty of children have both, and it usually runs in one direction: a gap appeared first, produced a few bad experiences - a red mark, a moment at the board, a comparison with a sibling - and the anxiety grew on top of the original difficulty. In that case the anxiety has to be addressed first, because a frightened child cannot absorb teaching aimed at the gap. Trying to re-teach fractions to a child who is currently frightened of fractions mostly teaches them that fraction lessons are frightening, which adds a second layer to unwind later.

Where does maths anxiety come from?

Rarely from one dramatic event. Usually from a slow accumulation of small ones, and three are common enough to be worth naming.

  • Timed tests. Speed drills are the most reliable producer of maths anxiety we see. A child who is accurate but not fast learns weekly that they are behind, and speed is exactly the thing anxiety destroys - so the drill measures the anxiety and then increases it. Accuracy first, always; speed only once the method is solid, which is the order our times tables post argues for.
  • Being wrong in public. Being asked to solve something at the board and failing in front of thirty classmates is a memorable event for a nine-year-old, and one instance can be enough.
  • Adults saying they were bad at maths. This one is uncomfortable because it is well-meant. "I was terrible at maths too" is offered as comfort and received as permission - and it lands harder from a parent than from anyone else. It is worth retiring the phrase entirely, whatever your own history.

How one bad moment becomes a two-year avoidance

A common real pattern: a child is asked to solve a division sum at the board in Class 4, freezes under the class's eyes, and gets it wrong in front of everyone. Nothing else happens - no punishment, no comment from the teacher beyond moving on. But the child now associates "maths, watched" with that specific feeling, and starts finding reasons to be slower to volunteer, then to avoid eye contact during maths, then to say she has a stomach ache on test mornings. None of these later behaviours look connected to the original moment at the board, and by the time a parent notices the pattern eighteen months later, it presents as "she's just not a maths person" - which is the belief, not the cause, and the actual cause was one afternoon that everyone else in the room has already forgotten.

Worth saying: none of this means anyone did something wrong. Timed tests are standard, teachers ask children questions, and parents comfort their children. The point is that the causes are ordinary, which is also why the condition is common.

What actually helps?

Rebuilding the experience of succeeding at maths, before doing anything about the maths itself. Concretely, over about a month:

A worked example: one child's first fortnight

A Class 6 child frozen on fractions might spend her first week entirely on Class 4 multiplication and division she can already do comfortably - deliberately nothing new, no clock, and every answer checked against a printed key rather than by a parent. The point in week one is not to teach anything; it is to let her sit at a maths page for twenty minutes without anything going wrong, which for a frightened child is itself unfamiliar. In week two, the questions get one notch harder - still below her actual class level - and the only thing that changes is that you start asking "how would you start this one?" before she answers, rather than "is that right?" after. Nothing about fractions is touched yet. That comes later, once a fortnight of low-stakes success has actually landed.

  • Remove the clock completely. No timed practice of any kind for four weeks. This alone changes some children.
  • Work below their level, deliberately. If they are in Class 6, do Class 4 work for a fortnight. It feels like going backwards and it is the fastest route forwards, because what is missing is the experience of getting things right.
  • Stop asking for the answer. Ask for the method. "How would you start?" removes the thing they are frightened of - being wrong - while still doing the maths.
  • Let them see you struggle with something and stay cheerful. Not maths necessarily. What they need to see is that being stuck is survivable.
  • Praise the approach, never the ability. "You checked that" builds something. "You're so clever" makes the next failure evidence against them.

  • Separate effort from outcome, out loud. A child who genuinely tried and got a question wrong needs a different response from one who guessed and got it wrong - naming which one happened, without judgement, teaches them to notice the difference themselves. What makes it worse?

Several things that are done with good intentions, and are worth stopping today.

  • More practice at the level that is frightening. Volume applied to fear produces more fear. This is the single most common mistake.
  • Comparison, to anyone. A sibling, a cousin, a classmate. For an anxious child this converts a difficulty into a verdict.
  • Sitting over them while they work. An audience is what they are frightened of. Be nearby and looking elsewhere.
  • Reacting visibly to a wrong answer. A sigh is enough. Children read faces far more accurately than adults assume.
  • Framing maths as a fixed talent. "Some people are maths people" gives a frightened child a place to stand and stop.
  • Extra tuition immediately. More maths hours, delivered to a child who is frightened of maths, without changing the emotional conditions, usually deepens the problem. The conditions have to change first - which is also why our free assessment is a conversation and not a test.

Does maths anxiety always look like crying or freezing?

No, and this is worth naming because it is easy to miss in a child who does not cry. Some anxious children freeze quietly. Others do something that looks like the opposite - clowning, disrupting, suddenly needing the toilet the moment maths starts, or becoming argumentative specifically in that lesson and no other. It is the same underlying mechanism wearing a different, noisier costume, and it is often mistaken for a discipline problem rather than a maths one.

The same relaxed test from earlier still applies here: away from the classroom, with no clock and no audience, does the same child who is "always messing about" in maths class sit down and do a question calmly? If the behaviour disappears the moment the audience and the stakes do, it was never really about behaviour. A child who has learned that being sent out of the room is less humiliating than being seen to fail a sum has found a genuinely effective way to avoid the second thing, and removing the disruption without addressing the fear underneath it usually just produces a different disruption.

Does maths anxiety go away?

It reduces, reliably, when the conditions change - and it persists for decades when they do not. A great many adults who describe themselves as bad at maths are describing an anxiety they acquired somewhere around Class 5 and never had contradicted.

A realistic timeline, assuming the clock is off and the work is pitched below the frightening level. Progress here is genuinely not linear - most children have a setback in week two or three, right when things had seemed to be improving, and that setback is normal rather than a sign the approach has failed.

What does not work is waiting for it to pass on its own. Left alone in a subject that gets harder every year, the gap between what a child can do and what they demonstrate under pressure tends to widen rather than close, and by Class 9 the stakes make it much harder to unwind - there is less room to spend a fortnight deliberately working below level when a board year is approaching.

What if there is anxiety and a real gap?

Common, and the order matters. Deal with the fear enough that your child will attempt things, then find and close the gap. Trying to teach fractions to a child who is frightened of fractions is teaching into a closed door.

The practical sequence:

  1. Two to three weeks of below-level, untimed, self-marked work. Purely to restore attempting.

  3. Rebuild from there, forwards. Not from where school currently is.
  4. Reintroduce timing last, and only for things already accurate. The mental maths sprint is fine at that stage and harmful before it.

What should I actually say, in the moment?

The general rule - praise the approach, not the ability - is easy to agree with and hard to apply at 7pm when your child is stuck on a question you know they can do. A few concrete swaps make it easier to reach for the right sentence without having to invent one under pressure.

None of these phrases are magic on their own - what actually helps is the underlying stance behind them, which is curiosity about the thinking rather than judgement of the result. The exact words matter less than whether your face and tone agree with them, since a calm sentence delivered with a tight jaw teaches a child exactly as much as the tight jaw alone would.

When is this something more than maths anxiety?

Most of what this post describes is ordinary, subject-specific anxiety that responds to the changes above within weeks. A smaller number of children have something broader going on, and it is worth naming the difference honestly rather than treating every frozen child as a maths problem.

  • The anxiety is not really specific to maths - the same freezing, avoidance or physical symptoms show up before other subjects, other kinds of performance, or unrelated situations entirely.
  • The physical symptoms are severe or frequent enough to affect sleep, eating or school attendance generally, not just the day of a maths class.
  • There has been a sudden, sharp change in mood, sleep or friendships alongside the maths avoidance, rather than the two showing up together over time as described earlier in this post.
  • The child talks about maths class in terms that sound like dread of a person rather than dread of the subject - a specific teacher, a specific classmate - which points at something social rather than academic.

None of this is common, and most families reading this far have the ordinary version, which is genuinely well understood and genuinely fixable along the lines above. But a tutor - however good - is the right professional for a maths-specific fear and not the right one for a broader anxiety condition, and starting with the right person saves months.

How do you teach a child who is frightened of maths?

Slowly at first, and by not asking for answers. A teacher who opens with a test confirms everything the child fears; a teacher who spends the first sessions on things the child can already do is doing the necessary work even though it looks like nothing is happening.

The part that is genuinely hard to do at home is being an audience that carries no weight. A parent cannot easily be neutral about their own child's maths - the disappointment shows even when it is not spoken, and children are extremely good at reading it. Someone from outside the family can be plainly uninterested in whether the answer is right, which is exactly what an anxious child needs.
