This is where a child meets a subject that gives marks for how a numerical is written, not only for the number at the end. Formula first, units on every line, answer stated. The physics here is not difficult; the discipline is new, and it is the thing Class 9 and 10 will assume without ever explaining.

Here’s one done for you

A magnet attracting a pin is a non-contact force, and specifically a magnetic one. The test is simple and worth saying out loud: do the two objects have to touch for the force to act? Gravitational, magnetic and electrostatic forces do not. Everything else in Class 8 does.

Here’s one done for you

P = F/A = 150 N ÷ 3 m² = 50 Pa. Three lines, and each one earns something. The formula is written before any numbers appear, the units are carried through rather than added at the end, and the answer has its unit attached. A child who writes '50' has the physics right and half the marks, which is a frustrating way to lose them.

The knife: sharpening reduces the area of the edge, and since pressure is force divided by area, the same force now produces far greater pressure. Notice that the force has not changed at all - only the area. Almost every pressure question in Class 8 turns on that one point, and children who say 'because it is sharp' have restated the question rather than answered it.

Answers

  1. 1) Sharpening reduces the area of the edge. For the same force, a smaller area means a much greater pressure, so the knife cuts more easily.
  2. 2) Wide straps spread the same weight over a larger area of the shoulder, which reduces the pressure and so the discomfort. The force is unchanged; only the pressure is.
  3. 3) A heel has a very small area, so the same body weight produces a much higher pressure and the heel sinks. Flat shoes spread the weight over a larger area.
  4. 4) Because the pressure of a liquid increases with depth. The water pushes hardest at the bottom, so the wall has to be thickest there to withstand it.
  5. 5) Because a rolling object touches the surface at fewer points at any one moment, so there is much less interlocking between the two surfaces than when one slides over the other.
  6. 6) Because a point concentrates the force onto a tiny area, and a small area with the same force gives a very large pressure, so the nail goes in.
  7. 7) Because a wide tyre spreads the tractor's weight over a large area. That lowers the pressure on soft ground, so the tractor does not sink into the field.
  8. 8) Because sea water is denser than river water, so it exerts a greater upward force on the swimmer. That upthrust makes it easier to float.
  9. 9) Because air pressure outside falls as the plane climbs, while the pressure inside the ear stays higher. The ear pops as the two are equalised.
  10. 10) To reduce friction between the moving parts. Less friction means less heat, less wear and less energy wasted.
  11. 11) Because its feet are broad and spread out. The same weight over a larger area means lower pressure, so it does not sink into loose sand.

While your child works

  • Check the units on every line, not just the last one. Marks for layout are given independently of the answer.
  • In pressure questions, ask 'what changed - the force or the area?' The answer is almost always the area.
  • This sheet is the physics strand. If it goes noticeably worse than the other two, that is useful information a single Science mark could not give you.

Class 8 Science - the guide

Why one worksheet per strand?

Because Class 8 Science is three subjects wearing one name, and the report card averages them into a number that tells a family very little.

Each strand is marked on a different skill. Physics wants numericals with units. Chemistry wants equations and observations. Biology wants labelled diagrams and named organisms. Seventy out of a hundred could be three strands at seventy, or two at eighty-five and one at forty.

Doing these three sheets on separate days answers that question in ninety minutes. In Class 9 the three separate formally and the answer arrives on its own - a year later than it was useful. The full argument is on our Class 8 Science tuition page.

How should we use these at home?

Thirty minutes each, on different days rather than in one sitting - partly for attention, and partly because separate days make the comparison between strands clearer.

  • Physics: check the units on every line, not just the last one. Layout is marked independently of the answer.
  • Chemistry: insist on the observation as well as the equation. That is where the understanding shows.
  • Biology: count the labels rather than admiring the diagram. Labels are what score.
  • Let your child mark their own work. Every answer is on the page for exactly that reason.

Where do Class 8 children usually stall in Science?

In a different place in each strand, which is the whole reason for splitting them.

  • Physics: the numerical is right and the layout is not. '50' instead of 'P = F/A = 150 N ÷ 3 m² = 50 Pa' is full understanding scoring half.
  • Chemistry: the equation without the observation. What you would see is what shows the reaction was understood.
  • Biology: the type without the name. 'Bacteria' where the answer was Lactobacillus or Rhizobium.

Why is there one worksheet per strand?

Why does my child lose marks in numericals despite the right answer?

Because working and units carry independent marks. 'P = F/A = 150 N ÷ 3 m² = 50 Pa' scores where '50' does not, and Class 9 Physics assumes that layout without ever teaching it.

What are the three conditions for combustion?

A fuel, a supply of air to provide oxygen, and enough heat to reach the ignition temperature. Every question about putting out a fire is asking which of the three is being removed.

What does a plant cell have that an animal cell does not?

A cell wall, plastids including chloroplasts, and a large central vacuole. Learning those three as a set answers a large share of the questions in the chapter.

Are these matched to NCERT?

They are written to the reasoning Class 8 Science expects rather than to one book's chapter order, so they work for CBSE, ICSE and state board students alike.

How long should a Class 8 child spend on one sheet?
