Class 6 Science tuition: the year naming something stops being enough

Class 6 Science covers food and nutrition, separation of substances, materials and their properties, living organisms and habitat, body movements, light, electricity and magnets. Most of the content continues from EVS. What changes is the marking: an answer now needs the reason behind it, not just the correct name.

Class 6 is the first year Science exists as a subject in its own right, and the first year children discover that knowing the answer and writing the answer are different things. A child who could name the separation method, the adaptation or the missing nutrient scored well in EVS. In Science that same response earns half the marks, because the question is really asking why - which property makes the method work, how the feature helps the animal survive, what symptom the deficiency produces. The content is largely familiar. The answer shape is not, and nobody says so out loud, which is why a strong EVS student can have a disappointing first Science term and no clear idea what went wrong.

The Class 6 Science syllabus, topic by topic

  • Food and its components

    Carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins and minerals, what each does, deficiency diseases and their symptoms, and what makes a diet balanced. Familiar from EVS and marked far more strictly.

  • Separation of substances

    Handpicking, sieving, winnowing, sedimentation, decantation, filtration and evaporation - each chosen by the property difference between the substances, which is where the marks are.

  • Materials and their properties

    Sorting materials by hardness, transparency, solubility and whether they float, and grouping them by a stated property rather than by appearance.

  • Living organisms and their surroundings

    Characteristics of living things taken as a set, habitat, and adaptation - the feature, the condition it deals with, and how it aids survival.

  • Body movements

    The skeleton, types of joints, and how different animals move. Diagram-heavy, and labelled diagrams carry marks of their own.

  • Light, shadows and reflections

    Transparent, translucent and opaque materials, how shadows form, and reflection in a plane mirror. The first topic that is genuinely new rather than an EVS continuation.

  • Electricity and circuits

    Simple circuits, conductors and insulators, and why a circuit must be complete. Also new, and the one children usually enjoy most.

  • Fun with magnets, air and water

    Magnetic and non-magnetic materials, poles, and the water cycle revisited with more mechanism than EVS gave it.

Class 6 Science in detail

What does Class 6 Science actually cover?

Food and nutrition, separation of substances, materials and their properties, living organisms and habitat, body movements, light and shadows, electricity and circuits, and magnets. Roughly two-thirds continues from EVS; light, electricity and magnets are genuinely new.

The syllabus divides fairly cleanly into two halves, and knowing which half a chapter is in tells you how to prepare for it.

Continuing from EVS - food and nutrition, living organisms, habitat, water and air. Your child has met all of this. The risk here is complacency: it reads as revision and is marked as Science, so a chapter that feels easy produces a mark that does not.

Genuinely new - light and shadows, electricity and circuits, magnets. These usually go better, precisely because nobody assumes they already know them. Children often enjoy the circuits chapter most in the whole year.

Why do strong EVS students slip in Class 6 Science?

Because EVS accepted the name and Science wants the reasoning. A child who writes 'filtration' rather than 'filtration, because sand does not dissolve' knows the answer perfectly well and is writing half of it - which earns roughly half the marks.

This is the single most useful thing a parent can know about the year, and it is almost never explained at school because it is a marking convention rather than a topic.

Three examples of the same shift:

  • Separation. EVS: which method? Science: which method, and what difference between the two substances makes it work?
  • Adaptation. EVS: where does a camel live? Science: what do its long legs do about the heat of the sand?
  • Nutrition. EVS: which vitamin prevents scurvy? Science: the nutrient, the disease and a symptom - three things, and children reliably give two.

The diagnosis is quick. Look at a marked paper and ask, for each lost mark, whether your child knew the content. If they did in most cases, the problem is answer shape rather than knowledge, and that is a much faster thing to fix. It is the same pattern described in studying hard but getting low marks.

What does a full-mark Class 6 Science answer look like?

It answers the question asked, in as many parts as there are marks, and it includes the reason. A three-mark question wants three things - and most children have never been told that the mark count tells you the answer length.

Four habits cover most of the recoverable marks in this subject, and none of them requires learning more content.

  • Count the marks before writing. Three marks, three things. This one habit is worth more than any amount of extra revision.
  • Say why, not just what. If the answer would still be true without understanding anything, it has probably not answered the question.
  • Label every diagram, with the line touching the part. Diagram marks are given for the labels, and a beautiful unlabelled drawing scores nothing.
  • Use the command word. 'State' wants a fact; 'explain' wants a mechanism; 'give a reason' wants a because. Answering the wrong command word is a very common silent loss.

These are the same habits Class 9 and 10 assume, which is why building them at Class 6 is worth so much more than it appears - see Class 10 for where they eventually get tested.

How much practice does Class 6 Science need?

Less than most families assume, and of a different kind. Answering questions in writing beats rereading the chapter, and twenty minutes of written answers after each chapter is worth more than an hour of revision before a test.

The mistake is treating Science as a reading subject. Reading a chapter feels productive and produces very little, because the thing being tested is the ability to construct an answer, not to recognise the content.

What works, in order of value:

  1. Answer questions in writing, in full sentences, straight after a chapter is taught rather than before a test.
  2. Close the book and explain the chapter aloud. If that cannot be done, it was read rather than learned - the mechanism described in why it disappears after the exam.
  3. Redraw the diagrams from memory, with labels. Ten minutes, and it recovers marks that are otherwise simply given away.
  4. Reread the chapter. Last, and least useful.

Does the board change what Class 6 Science covers?

The content is broadly similar across boards; the answer style differs. CBSE rewards precision inside a defined scope, ICSE rewards more developed answers and carries more internal assessment.

A Class 6 child is not learning different science under a different board. What differs is what the marking scheme wants from the answer.

  • CBSE - a tighter scope with clearer boundaries, and answers rewarded for precision within it.
  • ICSE - longer answers expected, and more of the year counted through internal assessment. ICSE children also met Science as a separate subject back in Class 3, so Class 6 is less of a jump for them.
  • State boards - vary, and the rule that matters is to practise with your own board's papers rather than another board's.

How do you teach Class 6 Science?

By teaching the answer, not only the content. The first sessions look at a marked paper and sort the lost marks into knowledge gaps and answer-shape gaps, because those need completely different work.

Most Class 6 Science tuition reteaches the chapter. That helps the minority of children who genuinely did not understand it, and does nothing for the majority whose problem is that they knew it and wrote half an answer.

So the first thing we do is diagnostic: take a recent test and go through it question by question, asking whether your child knew the content. What that reveals decides the term. If it is answer shape, the work is question practice with immediate feedback on structure - counting marks, adding the reason, labelling diagrams. If it is genuinely content, we teach the chapter from your child's own book, in the order their school is covering it.

Is Class 6 Science hard?

The content is not, and most of it continues from EVS. What is hard is the marking: an answer now needs the reason behind it rather than just the correct name, and nobody usually explains that. A strong EVS student can have a poor first Science term for that reason alone.

Why did my child do well in EVS and badly in Class 6 Science?

Almost always because the answer standard changed rather than the content. 'Filtration' was a complete EVS answer; in Science it is half of one, because the mark is for the property difference that makes filtration work.

What are the most important chapters in Class 6 Science?

Separation of substances and living organisms carry the reasoning that the rest of the year is marked on. Light, electricity and magnets are genuinely new and usually go better, precisely because nobody assumes prior knowledge.
