  • For a sum like 8 + 5, ask your child to make 10 first (8 + 2 = 10, then 10 + 3 = 13) rather than counting one by one on fingers.
  • The word problems are one step each. If your child struggles to pick + or −, ask her to act it out with real objects before writing anything.

About this worksheet

Why do the sums never carry a digit?

Class 1 arithmetic stays within 20 for the whole year and is worked by bridging through ten, not by a written column. Carrying, which NCERT calls regrouping, starts in Class 4.

Is bridging ten the same as carrying?

No. Bridging ten is a mental strategy - splitting one number so the other reaches 10 first, for example 8 + 5 becomes 8 + 2 + 3. Nothing is written above a column.

Can I download this with the answer key included?

Yes. The PDF download includes both the question pages and a separate answer sheet, so a child can attempt the sheet before you check it.

Does this Class 1 Maths worksheet come with answers?
