  • Find the total for a spoken “times” fact, such as “3 times 4”.
  • Match a description of equal groups to the correct total.
  • Solve a short word problem framed as equal groups, without using the × sign.

Which is greater: 3 times 4, or 2 times 5? Work out both: 3 times 4 = 12, and 2 times 5 = 10. Since 12 is more than 10, 3 times 4 is greater.

  1. 1)Which is greater: 4 times 3, or 3 times 5? How do you know?
  2. 2)Is 2 times 8 the same as 8 groups of 2? How do you know?
  3. 3)Which is smaller: 5 times 2, or 2 times 4? How do you know?
  4. 4)If 3 times 4 = 12, what is 4 times 3? How do you know?
  5. 5)Which is greater: 6 times 2, or 3 times 3? How do you know?
  6. 6)Is 3 groups of 6 the same total as 6 groups of 3? How do you know?
  7. 7)Which is smaller: 4 times 4, or 5 times 3? How do you know?
  8. 8)If you know 2 times 9 = 18, how can that help you find 3 times 9? How do you know?
  9. 9)Which is greater: 2 times 5, or 5 times 1? How do you know?
  10. 10)Is 4 times 2 the same as 2 times 2 plus 2 times 2? How do you know?

Answers

  1. 1) 3 times 5 is greater, because 3 times 5 = 15 and 4 times 3 = 12.
  2. 2) Yes, both equal 16 - 2 times 8 and 8 times 2 give the same total, just the groups are arranged differently.
  3. 3) 2 times 4 is smaller, because 2 times 4 = 8 and 5 times 2 = 10.
  4. 4) 4 times 3 is also 12, because the same two numbers give the same total whichever order you say them in.
  5. 5) 6 times 2 is greater, because 6 times 2 = 12 and 3 times 3 = 9.
  6. 6) Yes, both equal 18 - the order of the groups does not change the total.
  7. 7) 5 times 3 is smaller, because 5 times 3 = 15 and 4 times 4 = 16.
  8. 8) Add one more group of 9 to 18: 18 + 9 = 27, so 3 times 9 = 27.
  9. 9) 2 times 5 is greater, because 2 times 5 = 10 and 5 times 1 = 5.
  10. 10) Yes, both equal 8 - 4 times 2 can be split into two smaller groups of 2 times 2, and 4 + 4 = 8.

While your child works

  • The × sign never appears on this sheet, on purpose - Class 1 says and builds multiplication as “times”, and the symbol only arrives in Class 3.
  • Build the groups with real objects first - bindis, buttons, coins - and let your child say the times fact out loud before writing the total.
  • There is no division practice here at all. Class 1 does not touch division in any form; that begins the following year.

About this worksheet

Why does this worksheet say “times” instead of using ×?

Because Class 1, under NCERT’s Joyful Mathematics, teaches multiplication only as spoken language built from real groups. The × symbol is introduced only in Class 3.

Is this the same as memorising times tables?

No. Class 1 does not ask a child to memorise a table of facts. This sheet builds the underlying idea of equal groups, which formal tables are built on from Class 2 onward.

Does this worksheet include any division?

No. There is no division anywhere in this worksheet or anywhere in Class 1. Sharing objects equally is introduced the following year.

Does this Class 1 Maths worksheet come with answers?

Yes. Every exercise has a full answer key, and it prints on its own page at the end rather than beside the questions - so you can hand your child the sheet and keep the answers back. Some exercises also show one question already worked out, with the method rather than just the result, which is the part most answer keys leave out.

Is there a free printable PDF?

Yes, and there is no sign-up, no email and no account. The download button at the top of the sheet gives you the whole thing - all 86 questions across 8 exercises, plus the answer key - laid out to print on A4.

How long does this worksheet take?

About 28 minutes for 86 questions, though that is a guide rather than a target. It is designed to be split: the exercises are ordered so stopping halfway still leaves a complete piece of work, which matters more than finishing at this age.

Can I use it if my child is in a different class?

Often, yes - these topics are taught across several years and schools vary in when they arrive. Judge by the questions rather than the class on the label. If the first exercise is a struggle the level below is the better start, and the same topic at other levels is linked further up this page.
