While your child works

Every division on this sheet can be answered from a times table. If your child is stuck, ask the multiplication version - 'four times what makes 28' - rather than teaching a division method.
The word 'equal' is the whole of fractions at this stage. A shape cut into two uneven pieces does not show halves, and children who miss that go on to think 1/3 is bigger than 1/2 because the pieces looked bigger.
Fractions and division are the two Class 3 topics that most often cause trouble in Class 5 and beyond. If either is shaky, it is worth fixing now rather than hoping - our post on a child weak in Maths explains why these gaps compound.

About this worksheet

How should I explain division to a Class 3 child?

As equal sharing, and as a multiplication read backwards. 12 ÷ 4 is 'twelve shared between four', and also 'four times what makes twelve'. Every division on this sheet is answerable from a times table the child already has, which means division needs no new method at this stage.

Why does my child think 1/3 is bigger than 1/2?

Usually because 3 is bigger than 2, and nobody has made the equal-parts idea concrete. Cut a real roti into halves and another into thirds and put them side by side - the more pieces you cut a whole into, the smaller each piece gets. It takes one minute and it prevents years of confusion.
