While your child works

  • Say numbers as 'four hundreds, two tens, eight ones' rather than 'four two eight' while this is being learned. It makes expanded form obvious instead of a rule to remember.
  • The digit-versus-value distinction is the one that matters. If your child says the 4 in 642 is 'four', they have read the digit rather than its value - that gap causes trouble in column addition later.
  • Zero in the middle (305, 409) is the most missed case. It is worth doing a few extra of those rather than more of the easy ones.

Class 3 Maths - the guide

Which NCERT book does Class 3 Maths use now?

Maths Mela, published under NCF-SE 2023. It replaced Math Magic, and this matters more than a name change usually would, because a lot of the Class 3 material still circulating online was written against the older book and against older methods.

Class 3's companion NCERT books are Santoor for English and Veena for Hindi, with Our Wondrous World for EVS - which is the year EVS finally becomes a real NCERT subject, having had no book at all in Classes 1 and 2.

These worksheets are organised by skill rather than by chapter number, so they stay usable whichever edition your school has issued. But where a method differs between the old book and the new one - and multiplication is the clearest case - the worked examples here follow Maths Mela.

Why does my child's method look different from the one I learned?

Because it genuinely is different, and this is the single most common source of friction between a Class 3 child and a well-meaning parent trying to help.

Two changes matter most:

Multiplication is built from equal groups before the symbol appears. A child is asked to see 4 × 3 as four groups of three, to draw it as an array, and only then to use the ×. Many of us learned the symbol and the tables first and the meaning later, or never. The reason for the new order is division: a child who can picture equal groups handles division next term, and one who can only recite tables cannot.

Carrying is taught with place-value language. Not "carry the one" but "carry one ten" - because when 6 + 7 = 13, what moves into the next column is one ten. That extra word is the difference between a child who can check their own work and one performing a ritual.

This is exactly why every exercise on these sheets carries a worked example showing the method, not just the answer. A parent who teaches the older method to a child being taught the newer one creates a conflict the child cannot resolve - and it is a common cause of a child who "was fine at maths last year" suddenly struggling. What do these Class 3 Maths worksheets cover?

Four complete sheets, in the order the year usually runs.

  • Numbers and place value to 999 - expanded form, the value of a digit versus the digit itself, comparing and ordering. Everything later in the year rests on this one.
  • Addition and subtraction with regrouping - three-digit sums with carrying and borrowing, including the hardest case, borrowing across a zero, plus word problems where choosing the operation is the real test.
  • Multiplication and tables - equal groups, arrays, tables to 10, two-digit by one-digit, and rebuilding a forgotten fact from a known one.
  • Division and simple fractions - equal sharing, division as multiplication reversed, remainders, and half, quarter and third of both shapes and numbers.

Every exercise has a worked example. That is the feature the ranking competitors on this keyword do not have, and it is the one that makes a worksheet usable by a parent who is unsure of the current method.

Which Class 3 topics cause trouble later if they are shaky?

Two, and it is worth knowing which because they are not the ones that look hardest at the time.

Place value. A child who reads the 4 in 642 as "four" rather than "forty" can still get easy sums right, so the gap stays hidden. It surfaces in column addition, then in decimals in Class 5, then in algebra. It is the quietest and most expensive gap in primary maths.

Fractions. Class 3 fractions look trivial - half a roti, a quarter of a square - and the idea underneath them is not. A child who has not internalised that the parts must be equal, and that more parts means smaller pieces, will believe 1/3 is bigger than 1/2 and will carry that into Class 5 fraction arithmetic.

This is the pattern we see constantly in diagnostic sessions: a Class 8 student stuck on algebra whose actual problem is Class 6 fractions, which was actually a Class 3 misunderstanding never corrected. The practical advice: if either topic is shaky on these sheets, fix it now. It costs a fortnight at Class 3 and a term or more later.

How should a parent use these worksheets?

A few things that matter at this stage specifically:

  • Read the worked example first, together. Especially if you learned a different method. The example is there so you can help without teaching something that contradicts the classroom.
  • For word problems, decide the operation before touching the numbers. Most mistakes here are choosing wrongly, not calculating wrongly, and asking "is this an adding or a taking-away question?" catches it.
  • Do not supply a forgotten table fact. Rebuild it - 6 × 7 from 6 × 5 plus two sixes. Being told the answer teaches nothing usable in an exam.
  • Keep to about twenty-five minutes. A realistic focused span at eight - see how long a child can concentrate by age.

Why is my child's multiplication method different from the one I learned?

Maths Mela builds multiplication from equal groups and arrays before introducing the symbol, and teaches carrying with place-value language - 'carry one ten' rather than 'carry the one'. The reason is division: a child who can picture equal groups copes with division next term, while one who can only recite tables cannot.

What should a Class 3 child be able to do in maths by the end of the year?

Read, write and compare numbers to 999, add and subtract three-digit numbers with regrouping, know tables to 10 and use them, divide by equal sharing with remainders, and recognise half, quarter and third of a shape and of a number.

My child can recite tables but cannot use them in word problems. Why?

Because reciting is recall and applying is a different skill - the fact is stored, the meaning is not. The array exercises here close that gap, and our post on learning tables properly covers it in depth.

How do I teach carrying in addition?

Say 'carry one ten', not 'carry the one'. When 6 + 7 = 13, that is one ten and three ones - the three stays, the ten moves. That single extra word is the difference between a child who can check their own work and one following a ritual they do not understand.

Why does my child think 1/3 is bigger than 1/2?

Because 3 is bigger than 2, and the equal-parts idea has not been made concrete. Cut a real roti into halves and another into thirds and lay them side by side - more pieces means smaller pieces. One minute of that prevents a misconception that otherwise persists into Class 5 fraction arithmetic.

Which Class 3 topics matter most for later years?

Place value and fractions. Both look manageable at Class 3 and both cause disproportionate trouble later if shaky - place value surfaces in column arithmetic, decimals and eventually algebra, while a weak grasp of equal parts undermines all of Class 5 fraction work.

How long should a Class 3 child spend on one worksheet?

About twenty-five minutes. Beyond that, tiredness starts producing errors that look like gaps but are not, and it is generally better to stop and return the next day than to finish a sheet badly.
