While your child works

Rounding is the most practically useful thing on this sheet. A child who can round can sense-check an answer - if 47 x 6 comes out as 82, rounding to 50 x 6 = 300 shows immediately that something went wrong.
The comparison rule is 'stop at the first difference'. Children who keep comparing every digit after finding a difference confuse themselves unnecessarily.
Zeros in the middle of a number are the most-missed case, in expanded form and in words alike. A few extra of those is worth more than more easy ones.

About this worksheet

How do I explain rounding to a Class 4 child?

Look at the digit immediately to the right of the place you are rounding to. Five or more rounds up, four or less rounds down. It is worth teaching well because rounding is how a child sense-checks their own answers later - if a multiplication result looks nothing like the rounded estimate, something went wrong.

Why does my child compare 34,562 and 34,652 wrongly?

Usually because they compare every digit rather than stopping at the first difference. Compare left to right and stop as soon as two digits differ - the number with the larger digit at that point is bigger, whatever comes after it.

Is an answer key included?
