American parents search for this by country rather than by city or state, and the reason is probably that no local option exists near enough to name. The real question is not whether we can teach your child - it is whether the hours work, because India is nine and a half to twelve and a half hours ahead and no amount of enthusiasm changes that.
The hours, before anything else
India is 9 hours 30 minutes ahead of US Eastern Time and 12 hours 30 minutes ahead of Pacific, and it does not observe daylight saving - so the gap changes by an hour twice a year at your end, not ours.
What that leaves in practice:
- Weekend mornings. A Saturday or Sunday at 8am or 9am on the East Coast is a comfortable evening in India. This is the slot most US families take, and it is the one we would recommend first.
- Weekday early mornings. 7am Eastern is 4.30pm in India - workable before school, if your child is a morning child. Many are not, and there is no point pretending otherwise.
- Weekday after school does not work. 4pm Eastern is 1.30am in India. Anyone who offers you that slot is either using a teacher who should be asleep or is not being straight with you.
Pacific Time families have it harder by three hours, and weekend mornings are effectively the only sensible option.
The child who speaks but cannot read
This is the specific US pattern, and it is worth understanding rather than treating as a failure. A child raised in an English-speaking country with Hindi at home gets thousands of hours of listening and almost none of reading. Listening builds fluency; only teaching builds decoding. So a child can hold a conversation with a grandparent and be unable to read that grandparent's name.
The good news is that such a child learns the script far faster than a beginner, because every word they decode is a word they already know.
