Class 1 Hindi Worksheets with Answers (Grade 1) - Free PDF 2026-27

Five complete Class 1 Hindi worksheets with every question on the page and a full answer key for each - swar and vyanjan, आ की मात्रा, इ and ई की मात्रा, two-letter words, and a revision sheet. They follow NCERT's Sarangi, the current Class 1 Hindi book under the foundational-stage framework, which replaced the older Rimjhim. Parents search for one matra at a time rather than for Hindi generally, so each matra has its own sheet and its own page.

Class 1 Hindi Swar aur Vyanjan Worksheet

Class 1 Hindi · Swar and vyanjan (vowels and consonants) · 58 questions with answers

Download PDF - Class 1 Hindi Swar aur Vyanjan Worksheet, with the answer key on the last page

The starting point of Class 1 Hindi and the sheet everything later depends on. A child who cannot tell a swar from a vyanjan will struggle with matras later, because a matra is simply what a swar becomes when it joins a consonant - so this is worth getting solid before moving on rather than rushing past.

  • Recognise and write the eleven swar of the Hindi varnamala.
  • Tell a swar apart from a vyanjan.
  • Name the first letter of a familiar word.

While your child works

  • Say the eleven swar aloud in order before writing anything. The sequence is what the exercises test, and it is learned by ear far faster than by copying.
  • The swar-or-vyanjan test is simple once a child knows there are only eleven swar. If they hesitate, recite the eleven together first - the answer becomes obvious.
  • If your own Hindi is stronger than your child's, resist correcting the letter shapes at this stage. Recognition comes before neat formation.

Class 1 Hindi - the guide

Why does इ की मात्रा confuse so many Class 1 children?

Because of one feature of Devanagari that almost nobody states explicitly, and that a child cannot possibly work out alone.

छोटी इ की मात्रा (ि) is written before the consonant but spoken after it. In दिन, the ि is printed to the left of the द, yet the word is read "din" - द first. Every other matra a Class 1 child meets sits where it is spoken: ा comes after, ी comes after, ु and ू sit below. Only ि moves.

A child who has never been told this reads दिन as "इदन", and it looks like a reading problem. It is not. It is a notation problem, and it is fixed by one sentence of explanation rather than by another twenty worksheets - which is why it is the first thing said on our इ की मात्रा sheet and why the worked example on that exercise spells it out rather than just giving the answer.

This matters beyond Hindi, incidentally. A child who learns early that a written system can have rules that are about notation rather than sound handles later oddities - silent letters in English, for instance - with less frustration.

What do these Class 1 Hindi worksheets cover?

Five sheets, each complete rather than a fragment, in the order a Class 1 syllabus usually works through them.

  • Swar and vyanjan - the eleven vowels in order, telling them from consonants, and naming a word's first letter. Everything later rests on this.
  • आ की मात्रा - the first and easiest matra, because ा sits where it is spoken. Family words (माता, दादा, नाना, चाचा) do most of the work here since most use it twice.
  • इ and ई की मात्रा - the hard one, including the before/after rule above and how to choose between them by listening for vowel length.
  • दो अक्षर वाले शब्द - two-letter words with no matra at all, plus a dictation exercise, because writing from hearing is the direction exams actually test.
  • Revision - all four topics arranged the way a school test arranges them, including a short reading passage with questions.

Every sheet carries at least one worked example that shows the reasoning rather than the answer - so a parent whose own Hindi is rusty can help without teaching something wrong, and a stuck child can restart without waiting.

Which NCERT book does Class 1 Hindi use now?

Sarangi, introduced under the current foundational-stage framework. It replaced Rimjhim, which a lot of material still online was written against.

That matters practically. A worksheet set built around Rimjhim will not match your child's book chapter for chapter, and a parent working from an older guide can end up teaching a sequence their child's class is not following. These sheets are organised by skill - varnamala, then matras, then words, then reading - rather than by chapter number, which keeps them usable whichever edition your school has issued.

Class 1's other NCERT books, for reference, are Joyful Mathematics and Mridang for English. There is no Class 1 EVS book at all, which surprises most parents - our Class 1 EVS worksheets explain why and what follows from it.

My child speaks Hindi fluently. Why is the writing so weak?

Because they are separately built skills, and this is the single most common surprise for Hindi-speaking families - a child who converses easily at home can be genuinely behind on paper, and it is not a sign of laziness or inattention.

Spoken fluency is absorbed by ear over years. Reading Devanagari, placing matras correctly and applying grammar in a written answer are taught skills that have to be built deliberately, and none of them are practised by talking. An exam tests only the written side, which is why a child can be the most fluent speaker in the class and still score badly.

The practical consequence for home practice is that dictation beats conversation. Hearing a word and writing it is the harder direction and the one that transfers to an exam; reading a word already printed is the easier one. Our dictation words generator is built for exactly this, and our post on struggling with written Hindi despite speaking it at home works through the whole pattern.

How should a parent use these at home?

A few things that make a real difference at this age, particularly if your own Hindi is stronger than your child's and the gap is frustrating for both of you.

  • Read aloud before writing. Recognition comes before production in every language. A child who can read the word will write it eventually; a child who cannot read it will not learn to write it by copying.
  • Do not correct letter shapes early. At Class 1 the goal is recognising and reading, not calligraphy. Neatness that is demanded too early tends to slow reading down.
  • Use the dictation exercises. They are the only ones on these sheets that practise the direction an exam tests, and they are the ones most families skip.
  • Keep sessions to about twenty minutes. That is a realistic focused span at five or six - our post on how long a child can concentrate by age covers why pushing past it backfires.

If the resistance is to worksheets in general rather than to Hindi, that is a different problem and our post on homework without a fight is more use than another sheet.

Questions parents ask

Class 1 Hindi worksheets - your questions

Why is इ की मात्रा written before the letter but read after it?

It is a feature of Devanagari notation rather than of pronunciation. In दिन the ि is printed to the left of द but spoken after it. Children who have not been told this read दिन as 'इदन' - it is the most common Class 1 Hindi reading error, and one sentence of explanation usually fixes it permanently.

Which NCERT book is Class 1 Hindi?

Sarangi, under the current foundational-stage framework. It replaced Rimjhim, so older worksheet sets written against Rimjhim will not match your child's book chapter for chapter. These sheets are organised by skill rather than chapter, so they work either way.

How many swar are there, and does my child need them in order?

Eleven - अ आ इ ई उ ऊ ऋ ए ऐ ओ औ - and yes, in order, because that is how questions ask for them. Knowing there are exactly eleven also turns swar-or-vyanjan questions into simple recall rather than a judgement call.

Which matras should a Class 1 child know?

आ (ा), इ (ि) and ई (ी) as a minimum, and many schools add उ (ु) and ऊ (ू) by the end of the year. These worksheets cover the first three thoroughly, since those are the ones parents search for individually and the ones most exams weight heavily.

My child speaks Hindi at home but writes it badly. Why?

Because speaking and writing are separately built skills. Spoken fluency is absorbed by ear; reading the script and placing matras are taught skills that talking does not build - and an exam tests only the written side. Our post on this exact gap explains it in full.

What is the difference between छोटी इ and बड़ी ई?

Vowel length. छोटी इ (ि) is a short 'i' as in दिन and तिल; बड़ी ई (ी) is a long 'ee' as in नदी and रोटी. Saying the word slowly and listening is more reliable than any written rule at this age.

Do these worksheets come with answers?

Yes, every one, with the key printed separately from the questions so a child does not see it while working. Reading-aloud exercises are marked as having no written answer rather than being given a fake one.

Are the PDFs free, and is a sign-up needed?

Free, and no sign-up. Every question is on this page as readable text, and each worksheet also prints cleanly as a PDF. No email, no account.

My child reads Hindi words but cannot write them from dictation. Is that normal?

Completely normal at Class 1. Reading is recognition and writing from hearing is production, which is genuinely harder and develops later. It is also what exams ask for, so it is worth practising deliberately rather than assuming reading fluency will carry it across.

How long should a Class 1 child spend on one Hindi worksheet?

About twenty minutes, which is a realistic focused span at five or six. A tired child makes errors that look like gaps, so stopping early and returning tomorrow generally produces better work than pushing on.
