Class 1 Hindi Aa Ki Matra Worksheet with Answers

The first matra every child learns, and the easiest one, because ा is written after the consonant exactly where it is spoken - which is not true of the next matra they will meet. Getting this one genuinely automatic makes इ की मात्रा far less confusing when it arrives, so it is worth over-practising rather than moving on quickly.

While your child works

  • This is the easiest matra because the mark sits where it is spoken. Say that to your child explicitly - it makes the next matra's oddity easier to accept when it arrives.
  • Family words (माता, दादा, नाना, चाचा, काका) are the best practice set here, because most use the matra twice and children already know the words by ear.
  • If your child writes the ा too far from the letter, the word can be misread. A quick fix: the mark should touch the top line, like the letter it follows.

Questions parents ask

About this worksheet

What is aa ki matra?

आ की मात्रा is the mark ा that turns a consonant's inherent 'a' sound into a long 'aa' - so क becomes का. It is written immediately after the consonant, in the same place it is spoken, which makes it the easiest matra to learn first.

Which aa ki matra words should a Class 1 child know?

Everyday two- and three-letter words: आम, नाक, हाथ, काम, बाल, जाल, गाय, नाव, माला, and the family words माता, दादा, नाना, चाचा, काका. Family words are especially useful because most use the matra twice.

Is there an answer key with this worksheet?

Yes, a complete key printed separately from the questions, plus a free printable PDF. No email or sign-up needed.

Does this Class 1 Hindi worksheet come with answers?

Yes. Every exercise has a full answer key, and it prints on its own page at the end rather than beside the questions - so you can hand your child the sheet and keep the answers back. Some exercises also show one question already worked out, with the method rather than just the result, which is the part most answer keys leave out.

Is there a free printable PDF?

Yes, and there is no sign-up, no email and no account. The download button at the top of the sheet gives you the whole thing - all 59 questions across 5 exercises, plus the answer key - laid out to print on A4.

How long does this worksheet take?

About 25 minutes for 59 questions, though that is a guide rather than a target. It is designed to be split: the exercises are ordered so stopping halfway still leaves a complete piece of work, which matters more than finishing at this age.

Can I use it if my child is in a different class?

Often, yes - these topics are taught across several years and schools vary in when they arrive. Judge by the questions rather than the class on the label. If the first exercise is a struggle the level below is the better start, and the same topic at other levels is linked further up this page.
