While your child works

Say explicitly that these matras go below the letter. A child who has learned Class 1's matras as 'marks beside the letter' will otherwise place these by guessing.
The short/long test is the same one as इ versus ई - say the word slowly and listen. It is an ear judgement, and reading aloud helps more than written drilling.
If letter shapes get cramped when the matra goes underneath, that is a spacing habit rather than a knowledge gap. Bigger writing usually fixes it on its own.

About this worksheet

Where is उ की मात्रा written?

Below the consonant, not beside it - गुड़ has the ु sitting under the ग. This is the first time a Class 2 child meets a matra that goes underneath, having spent Class 1 with आ, इ and ई which all sit on the line, so it is worth saying explicitly.

How do I know whether a word takes उ or ऊ?

By the length of the sound - a short 'u' takes ु (गुड़, मुख, पुल) and a long 'oo' takes ू (फूल, दूध, झूला). Say the word slowly and hold the vowel; it is an ear judgement rather than a rule.
