Class 2 Hindi U and Oo Ki Matra Worksheet

Class 2 Hindi · U and oo ki matra (उ और ऊ की मात्रा) · 54 questions with answers

Download PDF - Class 2 Hindi U and Oo Ki Matra Worksheet, with the answer key on the last page

The first matras that sit below the letter rather than beside it, which is a genuine adjustment for a child who has spent Class 1 learning that marks go to the left or right. Saying that out loud before starting saves a lot of guesswork - and the short/long distinction works exactly as it did for इ and ई, by listening to the length of the sound.

  • Read and write words using छोटी उ की मात्रा (ु) and बड़ी ऊ की मात्रा (ू).
  • Place the matra correctly below the consonant.
  • Choose between उ and ऊ by listening to the vowel length.

Exercise 1 of 5 · 12 questions

मात्रा जोड़कर शब्द बनाइए - build the word.

Here’s one done for you

ग + ु + ड़ → गुड़. The ु is written directly BELOW the letter it belongs to, not beside it. This is new - आ, इ and ई all sat on the line. Tell your child that before they start and they will not place it by guesswork.

  1. 1)ग + ु + ड़
  2. 2)म + ु + ख

बड़ी ऊ की मात्रा लगाइए - add ू and write the word.

Write the answer · Guided

Here’s one done for you

फ + ू + ल → फूल. बड़ी ऊ की मात्रा also sits below, but it is a longer, hooked stroke. Say the word slowly: फूल has a long 'oo', so it takes ू rather than ु.

While your child works

  • Say explicitly that these matras go below the letter. A child who has learned Class 1's matras as 'marks beside the letter' will otherwise place these by guessing.
  • The short/long test is the same one as इ versus ई - say the word slowly and listen. It is an ear judgement, and reading aloud helps more than written drilling.
  • If letter shapes get cramped when the matra goes underneath, that is a spacing habit rather than a knowledge gap. Bigger writing usually fixes it on its own.

Class 2 Hindi - the guide

Why do Class 2 matras confuse children who managed Class 1 fine?

Because Class 1's matras all behave one way and Class 2's do not, and almost nobody says this out loud.

In Class 1 a child meets आ (ा), इ (ि) and ई (ी). All three sit beside the letter, on the line. A child reasonably concludes that a matra is a mark that goes next to a consonant.

Then Class 2 arrives. उ (ु) and ऊ (ू) go below. ए (े) and ऐ (ै) go above. ओ (ो) and औ (ौ) go above and to the right at the same time. The rule the child had built is wrong, and if nobody replaces it with a better one, placement becomes guesswork - which looks like carelessness and is not.

So it is worth teaching the four positions as a map rather than teaching each matra separately: beside, below, above, above-and-right. Two more things make it easier. ऐ and औ are simply doubled versions of ए and ओ, so four marks become two shapes. And ि remains the odd one out, written before the letter but read after it - the rule from Class 1 that is worth repeating every time it appears.

What do these Class 2 Hindi worksheets cover?

Three complete sheets, in the order the year usually runs.

  • उ and ऊ की मात्रा - the first matras written below the letter, with the short/long distinction judged by ear exactly as इ and ई were.
  • ए, ऐ, ओ and औ की मात्रा - the remaining four, plus an exercise that maps all the matra positions as a single system rather than as separate marks to memorise.
  • Words and sentences - opposites, singular and plural, gender, jumbled-sentence building and a short reading passage with questions.

Every exercise carries a worked example showing the reasoning, which matters more in Hindi than in most subjects because a parent whose own Hindi is fluent but unschooled may know the right answer without knowing how it is currently taught.

Why does my child keep getting Hindi gender wrong?

Because there is no rule to get right, and this is worth saying plainly rather than letting a child conclude they are bad at Hindi.

किताब is feminine. घर is masculine. नदी is feminine, पेड़ is masculine. Nothing about the objects themselves explains any of it, and there is no reliable ending to look for. Hindi gender is learned by hearing words used in sentences over years - which is why children from Hindi-speaking homes absorb it without noticing and children from other-language homes find it genuinely hard.

The practical consequence: gender is the one topic here where more worksheets will not help much. What helps is hearing and using the words - reading aloud, being read to, speaking. A child who is otherwise strong at Hindi and weak only at gender is not careless, and treating it as carelessness makes it worse.

Plurals are the opposite case and worth contrasting explicitly: they do have patterns (-आ becomes -ए, -ई becomes -इयाँ), so pointing out the pattern is far more efficient than learning word by word. Our post on struggling with written Hindi despite speaking it at home covers the wider version of this gap.

How should a parent use these at home?

Three things that matter most at this stage:

  • Teach the four matra positions as a set, once, before starting. It takes two minutes and prevents weeks of guessed placement.
  • Use dictation for the matra sheets. Reading a word with a matra already printed is much easier than choosing and placing the matra yourself, and only the second is what an exam asks for. Our dictation words generator is built for this.
  • Read the passage aloud together before answering. At Class 2 the reading is often the obstacle rather than the comprehension - a child who can hear the passage usually answers all four questions correctly.

Keep sessions to roughly twenty-five minutes, which is realistic at seven. Our Class 1 Hindi worksheets cover swar, vyanjan and the first three matras if any of that is still shaky - it is worth going back rather than pushing on, since the matra system only makes sense as a whole.

Questions parents ask

Class 2 Hindi worksheets - your questions

Which matras does Class 2 Hindi cover?

उ (ु), ऊ (ू), ए (े), ऐ (ै), ओ (ो) and औ (ौ) - the remaining six after Class 1's आ, इ and ई. Class 2 is also where a child has to learn that matras occupy four different positions rather than all sitting beside the letter.

Why does my child suddenly place matras wrongly when Class 1 was fine?

Because Class 1's matras all sit beside the letter, so children build a rule that matras go next to consonants. Class 2's matras go below, above, and above-and-right, which breaks that rule. Teaching the four positions as a map fixes it; leaving the child to infer it produces guesswork that looks like carelessness.

Which NCERT book is Class 2 Hindi?

Sarangi 2, under the current foundational-stage framework. Class 2's other NCERT books are Joyful Mathematics and Mridang for English. There is no Class 2 EVS book at all, which surprises most parents.

How do I teach Hindi gender?

By exposure, not by rule - there is no reliable rule. किताब is feminine and घर is masculine with nothing about the objects to explain it. Reading aloud and hearing words used builds it; more worksheets do not. A child weak only at gender is not being careless.

Are there patterns for Hindi plurals?

Yes, and this is the useful contrast with gender. Words ending in -आ usually become -ए (लड़का → लड़के), and -ई often becomes -इयाँ (तितली → तितलियाँ). Pointing out the pattern beats learning word by word.

Why does my child put the verb in the wrong place in Hindi sentences?

Usually because English puts the verb in the middle and Hindi puts it at the end. मैं रोटी खाता हूँ is literally 'I roti eat'. Stating that once explains most jumbled-sentence errors, particularly for children who are stronger in English.

Do these worksheets include answers?

Yes, every one, with the key printed separately from the questions so a child does not see it while working. Free printable PDFs with no sign-up.

My child speaks Hindi at home but the writing is weak. Is that normal?

Very. Speaking is absorbed by ear; reading the script and placing matras are taught skills conversation does not build - and exams test only the written side. Our post on this exact gap explains it in full.
