Larger than most parents realise until they see the figures. KHDA's own published landscape data puts 99,603 students across 34 Indian-curriculum schools, which is 25.7% of every private-school student in Dubai. India is the largest single student nationality in the emirate's private schools, and the largest teacher nationality as well.

The quality trend is genuinely positive too, and worth saying because it cuts against a common assumption. On KHDA's November 2023 figures, 83% of students in Dubai's Indian-curriculum schools were in schools rated Good or better - up from 73% the previous year, and from 45% when inspections began in 2009-10. Dubai's Indian schools have improved substantially under inspection.

None of which changes what a large class cannot do, which is notice that one particular child stopped understanding a topic three weeks ago. That is the gap a weekly one-to-one or small-group class actually fills.

The long-established ones include The Indian High School in Oud Metha, founded in 1972, along with its Al Garhoud branch which takes KG1 to Grade 4; GEMS Our Own English High School, also founded in 1972; Delhi Private School Jebel Ali, founded 2003; The Millenium School; GEMS Modern Academy; Gulf Indian High School, founded 1979; New Indian Model School, founded 1980; and Buds Public School, founded 1986.

Each school's KHDA inspection rating is published, and since KHDA ties permitted fee increases to that rating, it is worth looking up before assuming a fee rise is arbitrary.

It is the right question to ask, and the inspection data genuinely does cut against the assumption that Indian-curriculum schools in Dubai are weak. On KHDA's November 2023 figures, 83% of students in those schools were in schools rated Good or better, up from 45% when inspections began in 2009-10. That is a real improvement over a decade and a half.

But a school rating is a judgement about a school, not about your child. A Good-rated school with thirty children in a Class 7 Maths room still cannot pause for the one child who stopped following three weeks ago, and that child's report card will often still read as a pass. Averages hide specific gaps - a 62% in Maths tells you almost nothing about which topics went wrong, which is the only information that would let you fix it.

That is the narrow thing tuition is for. Not compensating for a bad school, but doing the one thing a large classroom structurally cannot: watching a single child closely enough, week after week, to spot a pattern forming. Group classes are AED 349 a month for Class 1 to 5, AED 449 for Class 6 to 8 and AED 549 for Class 9 to 10, for sixteen live classes a month. One-to-one runs from AED 599. Spoken English is AED 249 a month, flat across every class.

Set that against what KHDA publishes about school fees in the same emirate: a median of AED 14,107 a year at Grade 1 and AED 17,062 at Grade 5, with some schools above AED 47,000. Against local in-person tutoring, usually priced by the hour, the comparison is starker still.

One real live class, not a sales call. A teacher works with your child on actual material and you are welcome to sit in - plenty of Dubai parents do the first time, simply to hear how a teacher handles the moment their child gets stuck.

Bring something specific: a marked test, a homework page with the same mistake repeated, or the chapter their class is currently on. That is enough for a teacher to see the real pattern within half an hour, rather than working from a description. Afterwards you get an honest note - including if the actual gap sits two classes below where your child is now, or if we think tuition is not the answer at all.
