If Exercise A (alphabet order) is easy but Exercise B (beginning sounds) is hard, the gap is sound recognition, not letter knowledge - worth more time on the phonics sound-match game before moving to blending.
Say each word in Exercise B and C aloud before your child answers; this is a listening task as much as a writing one.

About this worksheet

Does my child need to know letter names or letter sounds first?

Sounds matter more for reading. A child who knows every letter's sound can start blending words even if she is shaky on letter names such as 'ay' for a. Letter names catch up through use.

My child reverses b and d on this worksheet - is that a problem?

Not on its own. Reversing b and d is common at this age and usually resolves with more reading practice rather than correction. It is only worth a closer look if it persists well past Class 1 alongside other reading difficulty.

What should my child do after finishing this worksheet confidently?

Move on to the CVC word blending worksheet, which uses the same letter sounds inside whole words.

Does this Class 1 English worksheet come with answers?
