About this worksheet

Why can't my child just sound out sight words like other words?

Some sight words, such as 'the' or 'said', do not follow regular letter-sound rules and cannot be reliably sounded out. They need to be recognised on sight through repeated exposure, which is what this worksheet practises.

My child gets the sentence order exercise right but forgets the full stop - does that count as wrong?

Treat it as an easy fix rather than a wrong answer - the word order is the harder skill and she has it. Just point out the missing full stop and have her add it before moving on.

How many sight words should a Class 1 child know by the end of the year?

There is no fixed official number, but a working bank of twenty to thirty common words - this, that, is, are, has, go, do, on, read and similar - is a reasonable marker of being on track.

Does this Class 1 English worksheet come with answers?
