The topic parents search for most often at this level - and one worth handling carefully, because a worksheet that assumes every child lives with two parents and one sibling will not fit a good number of the children doing it. The questions here are about relations and roles rather than a fixed family shape, and the answer key allows for more than one correct response where a child's own family is the subject.

A joint family has more than two generations living together, or more than one married couple. A small family is usually parents and their children only. Count the generations rather than the people - four people can be a small family and four can be a joint one.

There is more than one reasonable answer here, and that is deliberate. In your family the father may cook and the mother may go to work. Accept what is true at home and say so - the point is that everyone helps, not that a particular person does a particular job.

While your child works
- The last exercise has no fixed answers on purpose. Mark it for effort and honesty rather than correctness.
- If your child's family does not look like the examples in exercise 2, say so plainly and use your own household as the example instead. Children notice when a worksheet assumes a family they do not have.
- Relations are easier said than written at this age. If the writing is the obstacle rather than the knowledge, let your child answer aloud and write it for them the first time round.
