  • Builds a joined letter from two given consonants
  • Reads a word containing a sanyukt akshar without stopping

क्ष → क् + ष. The small slanting mark under the first letter is the हलंत, and it means that letter has lost its अ sound. So क् is 'k' with no vowel, joined to ष. Show your child the हलंत once and most of these become readable.

प् + र → प्र. When र joins after a half letter it becomes a small slanting stroke at the foot, not a full र. This one shape appears in a very large number of Hindi words, so it is worth practising until it is automatic.

शिक्षक → the joined letter is क्ष. Read the word slowly: शि - क्ष - क. A child who has learned to break क्ष into क् + ष can now read it rather than guessing from the shape, which is what most children do until this is taught.

While your child works

  • Teach the हलंत once, explicitly. Everything in this sheet follows from knowing that the mark means 'no vowel here'.
  • प्रश्न has two joined letters, so a child circling either is right. The answer key notes this.
  • If your child reads Hindi aloud fluently but stops at these words, this sheet is exactly the gap - it is not a reading problem.

Questions parents ask

About this worksheet

Does this worksheet include an answer key?

Yes. Every answer is on this page under the exercise, and the printable version puts them on a separate final sheet.

What is a sanyukt akshar?

Two consonants joined together, where the first loses its inherent अ sound - marked by the हलंत. क् + ष becomes क्ष. It is the first time a Devanagari shape is not simply one letter plus a matra.

Does this Class 3 Hindi worksheet come with answers?

Yes. Every exercise has a full answer key, and it prints on its own page at the end rather than beside the questions - so you can hand your child the sheet and keep the answers back. Some exercises also show one question already worked out, with the method rather than just the result, which is the part most answer keys leave out.

Is there a free printable PDF?

Yes, and there is no sign-up, no email and no account. The download button at the top of the sheet gives you the whole thing - all 46 questions across 4 exercises, plus the answer key - laid out to print on A4.

How long does this worksheet take?

About 20 minutes for 46 questions, though that is a guide rather than a target. It is designed to be split: the exercises are ordered so stopping halfway still leaves a complete piece of work, which matters more than finishing at this age.

Can I use it if my child is in a different class?

Often, yes - these topics are taught across several years and schools vary in when they arrive. Judge by the questions rather than the class on the label. If the first exercise is a struggle the level below is the better start, and the same topic at other levels is linked further up this page.
