Class 6 Hindi worksheets, free, with every answer on the page

Three free Class 6 Hindi worksheets, with every question and every answer printed on this page rather than behind a download. Class 6 is where Hindi stops being a language a child already speaks and becomes a subject marked on rules: sandhi, upsarg and pratyay arrive together, sentences have to be named by type, and the formal letter joins the informal one. Every exercise opens with one question worked through, and both writing tasks come with the format marked out.

What these practise

  • Sandhi - breaking a joined word into the two that formed it
  • Upsarg and pratyay, and building a second word from the same root
  • Naming the five sentence types, using the final punctuation as the clue
  • Rewriting a sentence as a question, an exclamation or a polite command
  • Muhavare - the meaning, then correct use in a sentence
  • Formal letter format, including the विषय line that carries its own mark
  • Telling formal from informal by the relationship rather than by importance

संधि, उपसर्ग और प्रत्यय

Class 6 Hindi · Word formation · 36 questions with answers

Download PDF - संधि, उपसर्ग और प्रत्यय, with the answer key on the last page

Sandhi, upsarg and pratyay are all the same idea seen from three angles: words are built out of parts. A child who sees that once stops treating them as three chapters to memorise separately.

  • Breaks a sandhi word into the two words that formed it
  • Identifies the upsarg or pratyay attached to a root word
  • Builds new words from a given root

Exercise 1 of 3 · 12 questions

संधि-विच्छेद कीजिए - break the joined word.

Write the answer · Warm-up

Here’s one done for you

विद्यालय → विद्या + आलय. Two vowels met and merged: आ from विद्या and आ from आलय. Three of these six end in आलय meaning 'a place', which is a useful pattern - once your child spots it, विद्यालय, देवालय and हिमालय all break the same way.

  1. 1)विद्यालय
  2. 2)सूर्योदय
  3. 3)हिमालय
  4. 4)देवालय
  5. 5)रामावतार
  6. 6)महेश

  12. 12) विद्या + अर्थी

Exercise 2 of 3 · 12 questions

उपसर्ग अलग कीजिए - separate the prefix from the root word.

Write the answer · Guided

Here’s one done for you

अनुचित → अनु + उचित. The उपसर्ग sits in front and changes the meaning: उचित means proper, अनुचित means improper. Notice सु and अप do opposite jobs - सुपुत्र is a good son, अपमान is the opposite of मान. The prefix carries the meaning shift, which is the whole point of the chapter.

  1. 1)अनुचित
  2. 2)प्रबल
  3. 3)निर्धन
  4. 4)सुपुत्र
  5. 5)अपमान
  6. 6)विदेश

  3. 3) निर् + धन
  4. 4) सु + पुत्र
  5. 5) अप + मान
  6. 6) वि + देश
  7. 7) अधि + कार

  9. 9) निर् + भय
  10. 10) सु + योग
  11. 11) अप + यश
  12. 12) वि + ज्ञान

Exercise 3 of 3 · 12 questions

प्रत्यय अलग कीजिए, फिर उसी मूल से एक और शब्द बनाइए।

Write the answer · Practice

Here’s one done for you

लिखावट → लिख + आवट, and from the same root, लिखाई. The प्रत्यय goes at the end. Asking for a second word from the same root is the part that shows real understanding - a child who can only split words has memorised, and a child who can build one has understood.

  1. 1)लिखावट
  2. 2)बुढ़ापा
  3. 3)मिठास
  4. 4)पढ़ाई
  5. 5)सुंदरता
  6. 6)सजावट
  7. 7)मोटापा
  8. 8)खटास
  9. 9)चढ़ाई
  10. 10)मधुरता
  11. 11)बचपन
  12. 12)लड़ाई

Answers

While your child works

  • Say it once: उपसर्ग goes in front, प्रत्यय goes at the end, संधि is two words merging. Three sentences cover the whole chapter's structure.
  • The आलय pattern (a place) unlocks several sandhi words at once. Point it out rather than letting them break each one separately.
  • Building a second word from the same root is the real test. Splitting alone can be done from memory.

Class 6 Hindi - the guide

What changes in Class 6 Hindi?

It becomes a subject rather than a language. That sounds like a small distinction and it is the whole difficulty.

A child who speaks Hindi at home arrives in Class 6 able to use every structure in the syllabus correctly in conversation, and is then asked to name them, break them apart, and build new words from the pieces. Sandhi, upsarg and pratyay are all versions of the same demand: words are made of parts, and you must show the parts. None of that is helped by fluency, which is why fluent speakers can score worse than classmates who learned Hindi at school - the pattern covered in a child who struggles with Hindi despite speaking it at home.

The formal letter is the other change, and it is the most reliable question in the paper because so much of it is format. The विषय line alone carries a mark and is the part children most often leave out entirely.

How should we use these at home?

Twenty to twenty-five minutes each, once or twice a week. Every exercise opens with a worked example, and the two writing tasks show the format rather than only the finished text.

  • Three sentences cover the whole word-formation chapter: उपसर्ग goes in front, प्रत्यय goes at the end, संधि is two words merging. Say it once and the three chapters stop feeling separate.
  • Look at the final punctuation first when naming a sentence type. It settles most of them immediately.
  • Check the विषय line exists in every formal letter before reading anything else.
  • Let your child mark their own work. Every answer is on the page for exactly that.

Where do Class 6 children usually stall?

Four places, and fluency does not help with any of them.

  • Splitting words but not building them. A child who can break लिखावट apart but cannot produce another word from लिख has memorised rather than understood.
  • Treating an elder brother's letter as formal. The test is the relationship, not respect.
  • Leaving out the विषय line. A whole mark, routinely forgotten.
  • Translating muhavare literally. The words never mean what the idiom means, and children keep translating until told explicitly.

What comes next is Class 7, where this grammar returns as an assumption. If Class 5 is still shaky, start with the Class 5 Hindi worksheets.

Questions parents ask

Class 6 Hindi worksheets - your questions

Are these Class 6 Hindi worksheets free?

Yes. Every question and every answer is on this page, with no sign-up, no email wall and no account. The printable version puts the answers on a separate final sheet.

Do these include an answer key?

Yes, under each exercise on this page and on a separate sheet when printed. The letter and the idiom sentences have model answers, which are examples rather than the only correct versions.

What is the difference between upsarg and pratyay?

उपसर्ग goes before the root word, प्रत्यय goes after it. Both change the meaning and only the position differs - saying that in one sentence stops a child treating them as two unrelated chapters.

My child speaks Hindi fluently but scores badly in Class 6. Why?

Because Class 6 marks naming and analysing rather than using. A fluent speaker uses every structure in the syllabus correctly in conversation and is then asked to break words apart and label sentence types, which fluency does not help with at all.

What is the difference between a formal and an informal letter?

The relationship decides it, not importance. Someone you know personally takes an informal letter; someone in an official role takes a formal one beginning सेवा में with a विषय line and महोदय. An elder brother is respected and still informal.

How should my child learn muhavare?

By meaning and use rather than by reciting a list. The words of an idiom never mean what the idiom means, and children keep translating literally until that is said explicitly.

Are these matched to NCERT?

They are written to the grammar Class 6 expects rather than to one book's chapters, so they work whether your school uses NCERT's Malhar or its own reader.

Can I print these worksheets?

Yes. They print cleanly on A4 with the answers on a separate final page, and nothing needs to be downloaded or signed up for.
