Sandhi, upsarg and pratyay are all the same idea seen from three angles: words are built out of parts. A child who sees that once stops treating them as three chapters to memorise separately.

  • Breaks a sandhi word into the two words that formed it
  • Identifies the upsarg or pratyay attached to a root word
  • Builds new words from a given root

Exercise 1 of 3 · 12 questions

संधि-विच्छेद कीजिए - break the joined word.

Write the answer · Warm-up

Here’s one done for you

विद्यालय → विद्या + आलय. Two vowels met and merged: आ from विद्या and आ from आलय. Three of these six end in आलय meaning 'a place', which is a useful pattern - once your child spots it, विद्यालय, देवालय and हिमालय all break the same way.

  1. 1)विद्यालय
  2. 2)सूर्योदय
  3. 3)हिमालय
  4. 4)देवालय
  5. 5)रामावतार

  11. 11) जगत् + ईश
  12. 12) विद्या + अर्थी

Exercise 2 of 3 · 12 questions

उपसर्ग अलग कीजिए - separate the prefix from the root word.

Write the answer · Guided

Here’s one done for you

अनुचित → अनु + उचित. The उपसर्ग sits in front and changes the meaning: उचित means proper, अनुचित means improper. Notice सु and अप do opposite jobs - सुपुत्र is a good son, अपमान is the opposite of मान. The prefix carries the meaning shift, which is the whole point of the chapter.

  1. 1)अनुचित
  2. 2)प्रबल
  3. 3)निर्धन
  4. 4)सुपुत्र
  5. 5)अपमान
  6. 6)विदेश
  7. 7)अधिकार
  8. 8)प्रत्येक
  9. 9)निर्भय
  10. 10)सुयोग
  11. 11)अपयश
  12. 12)विज्ञान

  1. 1) अनु + उचित
  2. 2) प्र + बल
  3. 3) निर् + धन
  4. 4) सु + पुत्र
  5. 5) अप + मान
  6. 6) वि + देश
  7. 7) अधि + कार
  8. 8) प्रति + एक
  9. 9) निर् + भय
  10. 10) सु + योग
  11. 11) अप + यश
  12. 12) वि + ज्ञान

Exercise 3 of 3 · 12 questions

प्रत्यय अलग कीजिए, फिर उसी मूल से एक और शब्द बनाइए।

Write the answer · Practice

Here’s one done for you

लिखावट → लिख + आवट, and from the same root, लिखाई. The प्रत्यय goes at the end. Asking for a second word from the same root is the part that shows real understanding - a child who can only split words has memorised, and a child who can build one has understood.

  1. 1)लिखावट
  2. 2)बुढ़ापा
  3. 3)मिठास
  4. 4)पढ़ाई
  5. 5)सुंदरता
  6. 6)सजावट
  7. 7)मोटापा
  8. 8)खटास
  9. 9)चढ़ाई
  10. 10)मधुरता

While your child works

  • Say it once: उपसर्ग goes in front, प्रत्यय goes at the end, संधि is two words merging. Three sentences cover the whole chapter's structure.
  • The आलय pattern (a place) unlocks several sandhi words at once. Point it out rather than letting them break each one separately.
  • Building a second word from the same root is the real test. Splitting alone can be done from memory.

Questions parents ask

About this worksheet

Does this worksheet include an answer key?

Yes. Every answer is on this page under the exercise, and the printable version puts them on a separate final sheet.

What is the difference between upsarg and pratyay?

उपसर्ग goes before the root word and प्रत्यय goes after it. Both change the meaning; only the position differs. Saying that in one sentence saves a child from treating them as two unrelated chapters.

Does this Class 6 Hindi worksheet come with answers?

Yes. Every exercise has a full answer key, and it prints on its own page at the end rather than beside the questions - so you can hand your child the sheet and keep the answers back. Some exercises also show one question already worked out, with the method rather than just the result, which is the part most answer keys leave out.

Is there a free printable PDF?

Yes, and there is no sign-up, no email and no account. The download button at the top of the sheet gives you the whole thing - all 36 questions across 3 exercises, plus the answer key - laid out to print on A4.

How long does this worksheet take?

About 25 minutes for 36 questions, though that is a guide rather than a target. It is designed to be split: the exercises are ordered so stopping halfway still leaves a complete piece of work, which matters more than finishing at this age.

Can I use it if my child is in a different class?

Often, yes - these topics are taught across several years and schools vary in when they arrive. Judge by the questions rather than the class on the label. If the first exercise is a struggle the level below is the better start, and the same topic at other levels is linked further up this page.
